I tend to try to drive if I can, partly for this reason.

If I drive I take a pistol and a few mags and an AR15 and a couple hundred rounds in mags.

If I fly it's just a checked pistol and two mags.

I also take a flashlight and a pocketknife and multitool.

It really depends on where we're going and how we're getting there, but going for a family visit or something like that usually means:

* wife and I both have our CCWs
* AR15 with a half dozen magazines (loaded, of course) in the trunk
* a .22LR or two

The .22s are to shoot for fun when we get there (family recreation, don't you know) and the .223 is primarily as a security measure. First, in the event that the house is broken into and robbed, I at least have one rifle I can rely on in times of need, and second, you never know whether something might happen to prevent you from getting home. (I wonder how many gun owners were stranded/visiting in NOLA during Katrina and thought, "Crap, I wish I had a gun"?

I'm planning on a 12,500 mile m/c trip this spring. I'll take my Walther P99c, two mags (20 rds), an extra box of 100 (for plinking), a surefire and a knife. Can't carry too much on a motorcycle anyway. Will have PA, WA, and HN permits so I'll go mostly where they apply.

I just joined today but after reading this section I'm wondering if I might not need to leave. I have had 31 years in L.E. and will say, If I thought I might need the gun I would not take my family. I carry weapons to make possible my family's survival if I am wrong. I take a Glock 26, 17L and Kel-Tec Sub 2000 when traveling, and as much 9mm ammo as I think i can carry. Is this wrong? Not so far, I've brought every bit of it back with me. Damned if I will see my loved ones in danger because I only brought 18 rounds. Please read the book "If only I had A Gun" and see the wisdom of bring multiple reloads, also I know that any firearm involved in a shooting will be held as evidence, so I'm gonna bring more than one. Please let me know if I am out of line and I will go back to my normal boards.

I tend to just carry a small snub revolver for around town and if I leave town for more than 2-3 days a medium size Smith gets packed as well. 1 speed loader for each gun gets included. The way I figure it, that gives me 22 rounds to take care of business. More than enough firepower.

Neubert500,

Welcome aboard. I don't belive you will get any flack. Stick around for awhile.
What I carry depends on where and how I am going.

1. What kind of weapons do you take on vacation?

2. How much ammunition do you take?

At least one primary pistol (Glock family) with two magazines on the hip, and one folding knife. In the car would be five spare mags with another 100 rounds loose. On top of that, a mouse gun in the front pocket.

In other words, enough to repell at least one attack wave of a zombie mutant inbreed hillbillies.

neubert500 .....Welcome!

I'm fairly new here too. This forum seems to have all kinds on it; I think that in a way it might add to things a bit. Everyone has a different outlook on things. Some of the responses do sound a bit off base from what I'd consider "normal behavier"; but, what the heck. :)

Thank you Mr. Dodge.
I was worried that I might set the record for quickest banned person. Nice to see that you'all are friendly. I just speak my opinions and hope for the best.
I guess my point was that my responsability to my family rises above everything else, and that I'm not bloodthirsty, I am happy to bring back ALL ammo and weapons but live buy the saying"it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".
Thanks again:D

My family just got back home from a week and a half trip to South Dakota and Kansas. The armament for the trip consisted of my S&W Model 60 .38 Special with 5 135 gr. Gold Dot SB +P's in the cylinder, 2 HKS speedloaders of Speer 158 gr. FMJ +Ps, a Uncle Mike's belt slide w/ 6 135 gr. JHPs, and a "ammo wallet" with another 20 158 gr. FMJs. My NAA .22 Mag Mini Revolver had 5 rounds of Winchester 40 gr. FMJ in the cylinder and 13 spare rounds in a film canister.
The Model 60 was my main "motel room gun" and the NAA was comforting in various dark parking lots.

Take two handguns in the same caliber. One needs to be small enough to conceal in case you have to get out of your car and walk. You need two so you can leave one with your spouse. At least one of them should be inexpensive in case you have to leave it in the motel room.

Good thread. I went on vacation with brother starting in Sante Fe to Nogales and then up to Utah and back. Fishing, Hiking etc. Towed a small camper. I took 4 handguns (two 44's and two 22's) and the 590. I can lock my guns in either the camper or car with cables and extra heavy duty locks so why not take what you think you might need? I walked into a robbery in progress outside Phoenix that trip, .44 in pocket, walked back out with a free bag of ice (either the crook or the clerk told me to take it and get out). I asked the cops outside why they didn't stop me, they just looked at me like...." huh? we thought you were in charge." No body was hurt but the clerk was so pissed at the cops, not sure why. Wierd. I won't go to Canada or Mexico because of their gun laws.

Forgot where I got the Ron Paul quote.

I went into the store (either a Circle K or a 7/11) for ice, saw the squads lined up outside, they are all looking at me, me at them, I figured if there was a problem they would have let me know. I walk inside and these two guys are acting very strange, shoving each other, I'm used to bizzare behavior and the weight of my little .44 mag snubbie always comforts me. So I ignored whatever was going on, get my ice and by the time I get to the register one of them shouts "Just take it and go", like an idiot I say "What about paying?" I get such an incredulous look from the guy it finally dawns on me that there is something really not kosher going on. I shrug and walk out and say to the cops "Free bags of ice inside" (like, why did you let me walk in there?), they laugh said something incoherrent and watch me drive off. Maybe it wasn't a robbery in progress, maybe just some junkie busting up the place, I still can't figure it but 12am Tempe AZ or thereabouts has some very strange neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, my daughter and my wife's relatives all live in the PRC, so I have to go unarmed. It is a very unsettling feeling. I haven't been there in 3.5 years and I'm in no hurry to go back.

If driving, it's generally only to states where we can legally carry. In such case, there will generally be 2-3 XD's plus a P3AT between the two of us, plus my regular EDC (ASP Street Defender OC/kubaton, Spydie Delica, Surefire E2D). The only "vacation" changes might be a couple extra loaded mags, and a couple extra lights.

If flying to a destination where we can carry, we'll each check an XD w/reload. Same EDC for me, although I of course have to check it in baggage.

If flying to a port of departure for a cruise, however...the guns stay home. All my EDC (plus a couple extra lights) gets checked for the flight, taken on the boat, and carried as best I can depending upon attire and activity...sometimes on-body, sometimes in a man-purse, or a combination thereof. I feel naked enough without a Roscoe, but as my empty-hand skills are "a work in progress"...I sure as tootin' am not comfortable depending solely upon them if I can keep other options open.

If I thought I might need the gun I would not take my family.
If I thought I might need the gun I just wouldn't go at all ;)

Jframe for pocket carry, subcompact if I feel like iwb. Usually just a frame in the pocket.

USPc 40

For vacation, I take what I use at home...my USPc .40. w/ two magazines (12 rds.) It's the weapon that I feel the most comfortable with.

I have had 31 years in L.E. and will say, If I thought I might need the gun I would not take my family.
As a Law Enforcement Officer, were you not required to be armed at all times? And in those 31 years, did you never take your family on vacation,to the movies, or shopping?

Neubert, don't worry about it. No one here thinks that's crazy, this isn't an Anti forum. You can relax now. :D That was a good explanation for carrying, I doubt anyone can logically refute it.
Man, that's a good ccw story, George. The cops just sensed that you were relaxed and confident cause of Mr.44 and they just let you in. Then you got through a robbery in progress and kept your cool. Pun intended. Reminds me of the hypnotism scene from "Office Space". Just goes to show how packin' eases things.

"I will never post on New Years Day again, I will never post on New Years Day again".

Sorry, I should have kept my fingers off the keyboard instead of posting like a madman. Poor manners on my part.

Allow me to correct somethings from my first post:

(1.)The title of the book is "Thank God I had a gun" an excellent read from person's who have had to do the deed.

(2.)My comment about "If I knew I needed a gun, I wouldn't take my family", Thats normal for my addled brain, It should have read"If I knew I needed a gun, I wouldn't go."

(3.)Yes as a L.E. I was required to carry, however that has changed within the last several years and now each officer has the choice to carry or not.(I carry!)

I hope I have removed my foot from my mouth, This serves as a reminder why God gave us two ears and one mouth. Thanks for the kind replys.
