A friend of mine just inherited several rifles from his father-in-law (actually, they were specified in the will as belonging to my friend's son) and they're currently stored in one of my gun safes. I'm trying to help him identify them, and this one's got me puzzled. Its obviously a hunting rifle, not a military piece. The engraving is beautifully done. Its a Mauser-type action. I've figured out that the "Krupp-Laufstahl" marking describes the steel its made with, and not the manufacturer, but the only other marking I can find is the term "Valentin Hafner" on the barrel. There's also a smaller marking with a stylized "Kassel" on the barrel. Its light, and beautifully balanced, and in excellent condition. Any clues?

It appears to me that you have a German or maybe Belgum manufactured rifle. Liik up "German Gun Collectors" on the web as they are a great source of info. Do you have any idea as to the calibre? And yes Krupp refers to Krupp Corp. which made the steel.

I wish I did know the caliber. There's no indication, and it could be 7mm or 8mm. I'm not about to fire it without knowing for sure :) I'm fairly certain its German. The "Kassel" marking may well be related to a German hunting club. This rifle looks as if it could well be used in such a scenario. Thanks for the tip. I'll give that group a try.
