Value of a contender???

Hi,
I am considering selling my contender.
It has a 14" 30-30 barrel with a 2 x 20 Simmons scope and is in excellent condition. What is an appropriate price for a FTF sale? I see these things on gunbroker for what looks like sky high prices, don't know if those are realistic, probably not. I'm guessing I could do a little better if I put it on gunbroker, but would rather do a face to face sale.

I also have a 44 magnum, a 45 colt, and a second 30-30 barrel, I might sell the two with the contender, and the 30-30 on its own, as I don't know if somebody would want two of the same barrel. Any help on pricing is greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm not sure if it is a contender or a G2, it has serial number 199***. I will post a pic or two.

Not a G2. I sold one about five years ago. Think I got $400 or so (with a 7TCU barrel). It was in very good condition, but well used.

Just saw a nice 10" contender in a shop for $325.00, no accessories; just purchased a stainless steel, 12 inch with muzzle break in .223 Rem., pachmeyers, a 4X Leupold scope and a harris bipod for $575.00 (I Figure the scope is worth a buck seventy five)

So, a contender with a 30-30 14" barrel and scope might go for 300-400?

You should be able to get $185 to $250 for the frame with a grip. You should be able to get about $150 for each barrel. There is a very active Contender classified board over on http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php which is Graybeards forums. The 44 barrel is very popular and should go for a bit over $150.

Thanks, coltdriver. This sounds like good advice... So if I sold the frame and grip for around 220, and the four barrels for about 150 apiece- that is around 800 dollars? There are two scopes as well, do you think that would increase the price a bit, or no? One is the 2x20 Simmons pictured, other is similar in value. Thanks all, for your help.

You will always get more if you sell the pieces individually. If you offer up everything for 800 nobody will be interested. If you list the frame and barrels separately you will do better. Go over to graybeard and look at their contender classifieds. You will get an idea of what things go for and how contender enthusiasts like to buy.

barrels--150-225-standard stuff
grips, forearm--35-50ish.
t/c scopes (illuminated)--100-125.00

the parts are worth more than the whole.

these are prices i have received on several contenders that i purchased for trade/parting out (bought at a retail gun shop).

i made $$ on the sales--enough to pay for a complete contender that i kept.

i sold grips/scopes on ebay and gun(parts) on gunbroker. it is getting towards hunting season--good time to test the waters.

Thanks for the great advice guys. I think the best part about selling the frame and barrels separately is I could send them regular mail, or ups/fedex right? Won't have to worry about that second day air stuff?

You can ship the barrels any way you want, but the frame is numbered and must follow the FFL shipping regulations.

I bought my contender in very good shape but well used. With a 14" barrel in .35 remington. I gave $289 out the door for it at a gun show around 4 years ago. From what I have seen I would agree that the frame with a single barrel should fetch in the neighborhood of $350 these days. Odd ball calibers will hurt you more than help.
