Value of M1911?

A friend of mine living in 29 Palms, California asks:

I have an M1911 (Not an A1) and I'm trying to figure the value on it. Where would I go for that info?

I'd check gunbroker for active/completed auctions to see what they're selling for.

First you would have to find out the exact make & serial number of the 1911.

If in fact it is an old, original, unmodified, commercial Colt, or GI issue gun?

Price could range from $1,000 to $100,000, depending on the exact maker, model, and condition.

As it stands now with what we know about it?

The friend is a long distance from where I live and I don't think he is comfortable with online stuff so I am helping.

Actually best would be a resource local to him, but 29 Palms is sort of out there in the desert.

Will get some photos and will probably need some feedback on what is important.
