You know, $1M actually means $1,000.00.
I don't know anyone who would read it that way, unless the context was Roman numerals.
As far as most of us understand;

G=Giga; 1,000,000,000
M=Mega; 1,000,000
K=Kilo; 1,000
H=Hecto;100,
D=Deka; 10
d=deci; 1/10
c=centi; 1/100
m=milli, 1/1000
µ=micro; 1/1,000,000
n=nano; 1/1,000,00,000
p=pico; 1/1,000,000,000,000
The only real exception I can think of is that most of us use "C" from the Roman numeric system to denote 100 while using metric-type abbreviations for everything else, but it still follows the rule of capitol letter for integers.
