Does anyone here have a Vang Comp shotgun or a barrel with the Vang Comp modifications?
Do you notice the difference? Worth the cost?

I have it on my Mossberg 500, including the barrel porting. It improved the patterning considerably, though not as much as some other shotguns I have seen. Maybe if I was willing to experiment with different loads I would see better patterns.

Hans Vang gave me a price break because I was an active law enforcement officer then. I don't know if he does that anymore.

Harrydog, I've little experience with Vanged barrels. But, in several years of seeing this come up periodically, little negative stuff and only one complaint.

Much of what they do mirrors what's done for high grade competition guns for trap, sporting clays, etc.

As to how important this is compared to spending a similar amount on ammo, range fees or maybe a top school like Gunsite, I'd be tempted to go with the latter.

I do have serious concerns about porting. Low light shooting with ports has obvious drawbacks.

HTH....

I also think that this would be the case, and thought it was strange that they claim the porting reduces muzzle flash.

I had my 11-87P barrel Vang Comped 2+ years ago and have had great experiences with it. I tested the factory barrel with lots of differents loads before having it done and then after getting it done. I saw great improvements with all the loads I tested. I wouldn't hesitate getting another.

We have, Erick, just trying to get mo'input.

It makes sense to think that Hans and the gang researched porting with as much attention to detail and care as they did to the other things before punching holes in perfectly good barrels.

Some loads flash much more than others, slower powders perhaps. One instructor's seminar long ago in dawn's early light showed us that one lot of Federal 00 had more flash than its Winchester peer load.

If I ever hit the Lottery or run the categories on Jeopardy, one fun project will be to get a barrel Vanged and wring it it against those I have already.

Just out of sheer scientific inquiry, you understand(G)...

Dave,

Mine is on an 11-87P and does not have the ports. I talked with Hans about it and while he will do them he recommends against it. I think that the ports on the autos might cause some functioning problems. He said the since it is a gas autoloader you already get recoil reduction.

Out of regular shotgun barrels I never have really seen much flash, even with the shorter ones at night. I have an old(70's?) lot of Remington OO buck that really throws some fire out of the short barrels.

I have a vang comped 870 Super Magnum with the works, quite a sweet piece of steel!

Thanks, Intel6.

My hunch is ammo selection is more of a variant than the ports. Since I dislike the side blast I see on the range, I doubt I'll get them done.

Toying with the idea of setting up the TB barrel with tubes and having the cone done. It's a bit overbored now. Maybe Vang instead of Briley...

I've had one for about a year now and is it awesome! You really can't go wrong wiht one of Han's creations. I wasn't a shotgun person till now!

I to have one of Han's creations, picked up the Rem 870 PM with all the options. Weather has been pretty cold here so I have not been able to get out to shoot it yet but will hope to get out in the nexed few weeks and see how it patterns.

I did alot of searching and talked to a few guys before getting one and all have been positive feedback, within a few weeks I hope to have my own results on this gun.

My primary use is HD and to use at some training schools.

One school ( The Site ) is only about 40 min from my house so I will be attending some classes there this summer.

My personal 870 has it, with ports, and so do all the shotguns at my last agency. I think the ports bleed off some of the gases, reducing the flash overall. The tighter patterns are liked by all.

I also put the surefire forend on my Vang Comp 870 PM and instead of the standard lamp module (65 lumens 6v system) I put the LM90 9V lamp system on it. I have the 125 lumens in it, as I think that 225 Lumens would be to much light and work against me in my house, besides you only get 20 min run time with the 225 lumens lamp in it. ( the LM90 does come with both lamp's with it when you get it.

That is one effective fighting light, it WILL make you turn away from it if shined in your eyes, and not want to look in its direction Period.

I have a 20" Vang barrel here but I can not really comment on its performance, yet.
I did some limited patterning and it is indeed pretty tight. At thirteen yards it was putting patterns up that measured from four to eight inches with 00 & 000 buck. Most were closer to four or five.
I have three 20" barrels here at the homestead in varying degrees of modification. One Vang, one forcing cone and backbore and one just forcing cone.
I have high hopes of doing some semi-serious testing this Spring.
That's it,
Mike

Hans Vang appears to be doing a good amount of business these days. I think there is a back-log for his work. The Bar-Sto barrels also seem to be generating a lot of interest. Only the 870 barrels are currently in production but the prototypes for other brands are currently being tested and should be available in the near future.
The cost of a new Vang Comp 870 is about the same as buying your own 870 and putting a Vang Comp Bar-Sto barrel on it.
Not sure which would be the better option, but either way it looks like it would be damn nice, if you've got the bucks to spend.
