I've heard people talking about modifications for the Ruger Vaquero revolvers.

One that would interest me is kind of as follows. I've heard that the original Colts have four clicks when cocking the hammer, and the half-cock notch lines the chamber up with the loading gate, making for easier loading.

I've heard that there's a similar modification for the Vaquero, that gives it three clicks instead of two.

Does anyone have this? Who does it? How does the half-cock notch affect indexing the cylinder to load the next round? Does the mod disable the transfer bar?

Thanks.

Jim March has posted extensive threads on Ruger single-action modifications, both on TFL and THR. Do a search and you should come up with a lot of good stuff, including links to sources.

Nightcrawler,

The Power Custom action kit is basically what you are thinking of. It consists of a hammer, trigger, and a Wolff spring kit.
The hammer has a half cock for loading, like the old actions do. Like Ruger should have kept in it's design.
The half cock actually causes the cylinder to index with the loading gate and ejector rod. Again like the old models do.
And the transfer bar is kept intact and functional. You get the best of both worlds, the transfer bar safety and the half cock for easier loading.

If you look close at the Power Custom parts they are very well made. Very clean machining and well finished.
I don't believe you 'need' the spring kits, but that is me. I like keeping the factory springs. I don't want a soft spongy action with a slow hammer fall.

Or buy a Beretta Stampede, which has both already. However, their selection is more limited than the Vaqueros.

I installed The Power Custom Hammer and Trigger on my .44 vaquero. At the same I swapped out for a belt mountain base pin, free wheel pawl and the a wolff spring set.

I'm extremely happy, a little light fitting was required on my gun, on the pawl and just a little on the transfer bar. I used a diamond knife sharpener :).

The new base pin took all the wiggle out of an already pretty tight gun and the combination of the Power Custom Lockwork and slighty lighter springs makes for a great trigger pull.

The freewheel pawl, plus half-cock hammer provide the maximum flexibility. I can either simply open the gate with the hammer down and spin the cylinder either way or thumb it back to half cock and use the cylinder notches that now stop correctly aligned.

When I ordered this stuff I got the Bisley hammer for my dragoon style vaquero. I like this combination, it makes it easier to work one handed and gives the gun look distinctive to people who know rugers.

Unfortunately it still doesn't sound or feel as good as the old three screw action but what are you going to do.

I highly recomend the Power Custom stuff, I spoke with the owner at some length on the phone and they are great to deal with.

I love the look of that gun!! And from the articles from this post it sure looks like a real shooter to me as well!!;)
