I am an experienced reloader and have been shooting my NM M1A for several years with a 150 gr spitzer bullet and IMR 4895 that I know is the reccomended powder for the M1A. To the point, I have been given a sealed 8 lb container of Hodgdon's Varget. I would like to use this powder for target and paractice loads and don't wish to stress the op rod or any other part of my rifle, so does anyone have any powder weight suggestions to use that would match the IMR 4895 loads. Most of my cases are once fired Federal Match cases.

It will work just fine.
Varget is just a tick slower burn rate then IMR-4895.

Hornady #6 lists M1A loads using it with 155, 168, and 178 grains bullets.
It and H-4895 give the highest velocity with the 168 grain bullet.

They show MAX loads with:
155 grain:
IMR-4895 - 43.4.
Varget = 43.2.

168 Grain:
IMR-4895 = 41.4
Varget = 42.7

178 grain:
IMR-4895 = 40.1
Varget = 40.6

i beg to differ, better check your reference. My 7th edition Hornady indicates:
Varget w/150 from 42.3 to 46.2
Varget w/168 from 40.3 to 47.0
Varget w/178 from 37.9 to 46.4

My favorite is a 174 Sierra HPBT and 46.0 using cci primer shoots sub moa at 100 yds

Differ all you want.

I said in the post the data was from the Hornady #6.

I have no idea what Hornady #7 says in it.
