I have a 18" JP upper I am going to try some 77 SMK through. I have both powders, whats your thoughts on the two powders with the 18" barrel. SMK's are cannelure.

BTW, I am not worried about the metering of Varget, and I know TAC is more temperature sensitive.

I am using Varget behind 55g bullets with good results. Varget is insensitive to temperature fluctuations and I like this. Load your charges accordingly for your bullet weight and you should be good to go.

I am leaving for a Pdog shoot in SD with 1050 rounds all loaded with Varget in .223 and 22-250 and four rifles.

Varget is supposedly hard to meter, but I have learned a trick. Solidly mount the powder measure so that when a grain of Varget occludes the drum, you can cycle it firmly enough to "cut" the grain.

It works, and you get consistent charges. You just have to not be afraid to let the measure slice the grain. I do this with a Hornady LNL measure.

+1 Took some practice metering Varget but it's not too bad now. It has been very accurate in my 308win & 223 Rem loads. Haven't tried TAC, but haven't heard anything really bad about it either...

I just loaded some SMK with Varget, using a Harrell's Precision. Its pretty consistent with in .1 grain. The TAC stayed right on the money, no variation at all.

I run Varget through my Dillon measure.
Out of the last 50 rds, I measured 12 of them.
All 12 were exactly 25.9 gr.
And my reloads are very accurate.

Sorry no experience with Tac.

I use both and I have developed summer loads and use them in the cold the differences are acceptable, I use to use a powder drop method but now I have the Hornady L-N-L powder measure unit much better, however another buddy of mine said the LEE

does a dandy job due to its different internal setup I did purchase one but have not used it to meter varget but its cheap enough to buy and just may be the ticket. Personally I favor TAC over varget on my smaller cal reloads but off the OP's orginal question I use W748 best for varmints reloads much easier to meter and accuracy is amazing....

I have loaded both TAC and Varget. To me the difference is negligible both in terms of accuracy and loading.

RMD

I've shot both with good results. Neither gave me the best accuracy so I always go back to AA-2460 for .223. YMMV.
