While going through the Cabelas shooting catalog I came across vegetable fiber wads. I have no clue as to what this product is for but I would guess that it goes between the bullet and powder but why?

Thank you in advance, Ken

Those particular fiber wads are really meant for black powder cartridge shooting, not muzzle-loading or cap & ball guns.
For those, your best bet is pure wool felt wads soaked in some sort of lube.

Or lube pills. They work really well. I am working on an experiment with them now. I have ran 58 rounds through now and the barrel is still pretty good looking. I am going to run 100 rounds through it without cleaning the barrel and see how the accuracy goes. So far accuracy is still pretty good. I will post some pictures when I get done.

Vegetable fiber wad acts as gas checks and help to keep the barrel clear of powder residue. I thought that they were supposed to be more effective than wool wads when used with the more powerful loads and heavier projectiles.

You are right Dave. Veggie fiber wads do protect the base of cast bullets. I have a 451 Rigby that recommends the use of these wafers between the slug and the charge...

40-65...clean and prime shell (not re-sized), load 63g of Swiss FFFg and place a tight fitting fiber wad over powder, place the charged shell in the press with special compressing die and compress to make room for bullet which is then finger seated on top of the wad...handle carefully because the bullet can fall out.

I'd like it better if "vegetable fibre wads" were a special material, for the price they charge.

Look at the pictures they post of the bunch of them. They are nothing but Vellumoid gasket paper, bought at your local auto parts for about a buck a square foot. Granted, they are already punched out for them who are too lazy to tap a hammer to a punch.

"Vegetable fibre" is market speak for "paper"

Ah, well, do as you will.

Cheers,

George
