Allright all you brainiacs, a discussion came up at work today about leaving your firearm in your vehicle due to weapon free business, etc. The talk centered on using a vehicle safe. Keeping in mind the majority of safes have a cable to attach to seat post, or whatever. The question is why not just use a steel cable, run it through the trigger guard and the seat post? Thus saving the cost of a safe... Or is this just my dutch thinking??? Thoughts?

Well, that could sort of work, but it would probably still be possible to fire the pistol, for one thing. Another thing to think about, at least in my case, is that my car under the seat ain't the cleanest place around, even though I'm not a slob. I like that my tethered lockbox keeps all the crud out of things while it's down there. I also like that the lockbox ("Center of Mass" key safe, to be exact) looks like a lil' ol' plain black box on the floor, in the unlikely event that someone were to glance in and see me fiddling with something in the dark on the floor of the car.

The COM safes are very reasonably priced, I'd just get one of those or something equivalent. Not enough $ savings to make the downside worthwhile for me.

I usually carry a semi-auto and with a little time/common sense someone could still steal the slide/mag-ammo/extra mag/holster/flashlight with only a cable through my trigger guard.

I did see a picture in one of Ayoob's books on handguns about how, if you had a set of handcuffs, you could use them to secure your weapon pretty safely, at least any wheelgun or auto with an exposed hammer. Cuff one wrist of the cuffs through the trigger guard and then over the back, run it in between the slide and the hammer and click shut. Then click the other cuff around something secure like car seat support, pipe under the sink, etc. The cuff prevents the hammer from falling so the gun is safe, and it's not going anywhere. Although handcuff keys aren't hard to get, it seems reasonable that the average smash 'n grab thief isn't going to have a set handy.

Still have the same problems though about dirt/crud getting into it, and the magazine and other accessories are still unsecured.

Keeping in mind, if a lowlife wants something bad enough he will get it, wether it's in a safe, tethered or bolted, it will happen. I was thinking preventing a smash and grab sort of thing. Let's face it, if there is enough time anything can be cut, unbolted or whatever. And I'm not talking about leaving it in your vehicle overnight, allowing all the time someone would need. Sounds like the common thought is a safe is still preferred.....
Smoke em if you got em.......:D

My truck has been broken into. They tried to yank the autovault safe but it was cabled down. They could not take it. Also many smash and grab thiefs usually only have a screwdriver to take out stereos

+1 on the Center of Mass gun boxes. I have been using two, with matching keys, for several years now with no problems. I especially like them on road trips while staying in motels. When I carry them into the room they just look like books to anyone just glancing at them.

Just a quick note on steel cables, even small bolt cutters go thru steel cable with relative ease. I have seen false bottoms to center consoles or false backs to glove boxes that would easily fit a firearm. If there is a good car audio shop in your area they can probably make a pistol size compartment in your vehicle that no one would notice.

Putting a cable thru the trigger guard on what should be a loaded weapon does not sound safe at all.

Make it yourself--only you know then. Also, a fun project easy to do. Will make you think. Hidden compartments are illegal in some states--they WERE in Illinois but the courts have gutted that stupid il-conceived law here. Make sure it's legal where you're at.

On this subject. say you carry to the point where you are going to leave your gun in the car. You pull up in your car and have to transfer your gun from your person to your safe that is cabled to the seat rails. I find this very cumbersome and time consuming. Reaching down and getting ahold of it, lifting it up and opening, placing the gun, locking and putting it back under. Also anyone walking up to the car next to you can see what your doing. Anyone have a suggestion for how to do this faster or inconspicuously?

I think it's better to keep the gun out of sight when locked up in the car. I bought one of the Secure It boxes for $30 and have been very happy with it.

Concealment is better. THose Secure it boxes are nice, but what do they bolt too? Kind of pointless having a lock on it if the Thief can just pick it up and walk away and figure out how to oopen it later.

Yup, that would be stupid. Fortunately the box comes with a thick cable to attach to a seat post, the seat hinge, etc. The cable can be seen in the pictures below.

Unless someone knows where to look, they'd never find my car gun. Not in the typical under seat/glovebox/console hiding spot.
