According to my sources 47.7 gr is a max load. I don't think it would be possible to get 55 gr in a 308 case. Are you sure? I bet it was 45 gr.

The starting load is 43 gr @ about 2660 fps. The max load of 47.7 should be about 2900. But those are from longer test barrels. In real world guns with a normal length barrel, you can take 50-100 fps off those numbers. My best guess for 45 gr of powder would be 2700 fps.

But no 2 barrels are the same. You might get 2600 fps, and my rifle with the same 22" barrel might get 2700 fps.

According to the Hodgdon website, you're in uncharted territory. Their max load is list as 47.7C (compressed).

According to Hornady, maker of the bullet, their max is 44.9 giving a velocity of 2700fps from a 22" barrel. Like others here, I'm hoping the OP misunderstood his FIL.......:uhoh:

My main reloading manual says start load is 42.3gr with a velocity around 2682. Max load listed is 45gr at 2840fps. Even in my Speer manual that usually shows hotter stuff puts start load at 43gr and 2533fps to a max of 47.0C and 2814. Once you start compressing loads that is the case's way of telling you to stop. A 308Win case only has a capacity of 3.43CC and 55gr of any powder is not feasible. Even H414. Check your FIL numbers again before doing anything else.
