I've always wondered about the lack of a vent rib on tactical shotguns. Just about every 870 that I have used at work have been smooth bore with a standard bead.

Is there any rationale on not using a shorter 20-24 in vent rib turkey barrel for defense? Or why not an 18"vent rib. If I'm not mistaken, I've seen a match shooter on tv shooting a longer vent rib barrel with an extended mag tube in 3 gun.

I think the best all around shotgun would be an 870 Turkey Gun with the 21 inch Rem Choke barrel. That shotgun would handle about 99% of hunting or defense situations you might encounter, and not be too long in overall length for Home Defense.

On top of all that, the vent ribs just plain look cool :).

In a defense shotgun I am beginning to think the shorter length of the stock is more important than a short barrel , with in reason. Yes 1100 Remingtons are very deadly with 21" barrels and Brownings and Ithaca Deer Slayer 24" barrels can work too for me witha 13" or a little less LOP.
The bead on a vent rib is not too good tho for defensive purposes. Robar used to fab a post that was somehow affixed to a vent rib that seems pretty hot , if you forgive the pun.
