I'm thinking about selling or trading my HK G3 for either a Vepr .308 or a Saiga .308 (22" barrel version). My HK just doesn't have the accuracy I'd like in a .308 (at least mine doesn't). Which of these to you think is more accurate? Saiga is half the price of the Vepr, but will be converted to Pistol Grip configuration (just like all my Saigas). Saiga mags are cheaper and only hold 8 rounds, but can hold 10 with modification. Which would you prefer? I'd like a fun range gun that is decently accurate w/o having to use expensive match grade ammo. I also have around 1400 rounds of surplus .308 left, so it would make sense to get another .308.

Where did you get the thumbhole stock for the Saiga.

I have the 16" .308 model, with the iron sights it will do a 2" 5 shot group at 100 yards when I am doing my part with the aussie surplus I got from AIM. A 9 inch paper plaate is easily hit at 100 yards.

For a battle rifle errr AK sporter its pretty accurate.

good review. That Saiga isn't mine, I linked the pic from a website. But the stock on it I know is a Choate dragonov style, I think they run about $65, you can buy them pretty much anywhere.

Master Blaster, by the way, have you converted your Saiga to pistol grip? Just wondering if you can do 2" groups with the crappy stock trigger or if you did the conversion, which trigger group you used.

IIRC, the VEPR has a receiver/bolt that are more like the Dragunov, while the Saiga is straight AK. The former should be more accurate.

That said, my .308 Saiga is pretty accurate for what it is (3"-4" open sight 100 yard groups). There's usually a first shot stringer, so the groups would be tighter without it. I've never shot a VEPR.

The Vepr is built on an RPK receiver and has a heavy barrel (a very heavy one in the Super Vepr). The receiver is thicker and stiffer, as is the barrel, and is thus given to less "flexing" during firing. Theoretically this would make for better accuracy.

VEPR is all AK (outside of the RPK thing), but might look nicer then the Saiga. I handled a Tiger (true Dragunov derivative) and its internals were on par with an AR. It was nice.

The two inch 5 shot group was with the factory rifle stock off of a sandbag, and it was a VERY good day for me. I find the full size rifle stock on the saiga to be more comfortable, than a short AK style stock I have on my SAR-1.
