Hello, I just recently bought a Vepr ak from atlantic arms. I have never owned an ak before and I noticed that the top of the tube on the bolt carrier is rubbing against the top of the gas tube when cocking it. Is that normal? Makes a nice metal against metal sound...... just doesn't seem right, shouldn't it hover inside of the gas tube? Haven't fired it yet and I asked atlantic if that was normal and they said fire it so hopefully it doesn't blow up in my face. Thanks guys.

im not sure if this helps answer your question but ive taken the gas tube off and inserted the BCG and the spring and the piston will almost never line up with the gas block it will either skew up, left, or right of the gas block. i cant say the the piston bangs against the gas tube on my milled mak but i could see it happening.

I dont think its a problem but im not really sure

It's certainly not going to blow up on you. On my AKs the piston is generally rubbing against some part of the tube. The tube basically guides the piston and there's not a whole lot else keeping it in alignment (ie it's going to move around inside the tube). So what you're describing sounds totally normal, though I guess there is always the chance that it's in contact much more than other AKs but I'd be surprised. Either way it won't be blowing up on you and the action will smooth out as you shoot it.

It's pretty common with AK's.
My Saiga, at least, hovers generally about the middle when locked back. But when you pull the bolt handle back, it rubs against whichever side the bolt carrier decides to twist or rock.
Unless it's physically bent, no point in worrying about it yet.

Mine rubs against the top and won't even close on its own without the gas tube in. AK's are low tolerance guns, its not a big deal.

Well it will never no longer be an issue, its just the angle the piston sits at in relation to the location of the gas block. But like I said, not a big deal.

Wow, thanks everybody for helping out. Don't get me wrong, that is what I figured.....I just wanted to ask people that are much more familiar with the Ak platform. I trust it since it came from vepr too.....I was more worried about it having a catastrophic failure and doing something to me. I take care of all my guns very well so if I see it develop a problem over time I'll just take it to a gunsmith or send it to Atlantic. But now I just need to get some American Eagle brass and go shoot it.....Thanks again everybody

The only answer is its an ak. Treat it like an ak. The only way to treat an ak is by shooting to your mag or pocketbook runs dry. Have fun, dont worry :)

If there is a actual issue with the gun we are not going anywhere and will work with you if there is a problem but as we told you it is not uncommon to have wiggle with the gas piston or a bit of rubbing in s spot . Go shot the rifle if there is a legitimate issue do not freak out just shoot us a email and we will get you taken care of .

For the OP- I speak from direct experience with Atlantic Firearms (purchased an AK from them before) and can tell you that you are in good hands. Blaine is "good people".

The "problem" you describe isn't- just how AKs work.

Oh I know, but like I said I am new to Ak's, not rifles. I just wanted to make sure. There are no gunsmiths with in a 100 mile radius, at least none I trust or have been recommended. Just trying to cover my bases. Thanks again everybody.
