You know, despite the fact that I'm about ready to send my FAL off to be converted to total-awesomeness, sometimes I look back and regret not buying the Vepr II .308 way back when.
I mean, I love the AK design. Period! (Exclamation point?) And the idea of a nice scoped Vepr II (maybe even with an LER scope) for mid-ranged work and a 7.62x39 AK (Arsenal) for close-in stuff still has appeal for me.
Granted, my 16" FAL is kind of a compromise. Lower mag cap than the regular AK, but more power. Shorter barrel/less velocity than the Vepr, but higher capacity, and handier.
I don't suppose there's any reason I can't have both?
Actually, I imagined a Kalashnikov triumvirate:
-Arsenal SA-M7R (with scope rail) 7.62x39
-Vepr II .308, shortened to 18", Ultimak mount, Leupold LER scope 2.5x
-Super Vepr .308, 22", IOR/Valdada 6x30 Super M2 scope
But, alas, I chose a different path. The FAL carbine I'll have is a nice "do-all".
Strange, but sometimes I've got this urge to start my gun collection over from scratch, all pre-planned and such, to get a nice small collection that fills my needs and works well. The three aforementioned rifles (or even sans the Super VEPR), my 870 shotgun, my Colt and my 625. Heck, even less flashy? CZ P-01 and a Ruger .357. (I do prefer the .45, though.)
Unfortunately, I'm too much of a gun whore for that whole theory to ever really work, I think. I might just have to get the Vepr II anyway, even though, with the FAL, I technically have no use for it.
Too bad the importation's so spotty. Mags are hard to find. Don't care so much if they only hold 10 rounds, but I want to have plenty of them. Might be worth getting the Galil magazine conversion (if Krebs even does it anymore) just because the 12-round .308 Galil mags are cheaper and more plentiful than the 10 round Vepr .308 mags. (The 25 round Galil mags are all but impossible to find now.)
