I have been considering getting a SHTF rifle since I live in Florida and we are always getting hit w/ tropical storms etc. After looking over a number of possibilities I am strongly considering the VEPR rifle (rpk ak-47 ) clone rifle from Robarms. Does anyone here have one or any experience with one? Is it worth the money? Also can anyone tell me what options are best for a ak-47 type rifle? I am considering a bolt buffer and possibly a light mount type forearm. I appreciate any input on this I can get.

Thanks

High Roader Correia is the go-to guy on the Vepr. He can get you a screaming deal on one in any configuration.

The one you're probably most interested in is the Vepr-K, with the 16" barrel, in 7.62x29mm.. They have 20" models available. but unless getting the .308 (or maybe the .223), I'd go with 16".

Robinson Armament's Vepr webpage can be viewed HERE.

Here's the model you're probably most interested in:

Robsinson Armament/MOLOT Vepr-K, 7.62x39mm. 16.5" barrel, US made furniture, muzzle brake.

For rail-type handguards, you're probably best off looking at the offerings from Ultimak. In addition to their forward optics mount, they now offer a RIS type handguard.

Vepr II .308 fitted with Ultimak rail handguards and optics mount.

As you can see from the above picture, the Ultimak rail handguards can be adapted to the Vepr line.

Best of all? You can get the Vepr-K rifle and the Ultimak handguards for about the same price as a box stock AR-15.

Nightcrawler...it just now clicked into place...your sig...

Call of Cthulu. I thought I was losing my snap there for a minute. :uhoh:

Good show, NC

I have owned the 16" in 223.It was a well made rifle, even under close examination. My son and I (no marksman-open sights) could group around 3-4" at 50 yards.Others certainly will report better results. It was heavy (around 9lbs,if I remember correctly),as a result of the RPK receiver.Functioned flawlessly from day one-no hiccups of any sort.Scope mounts are $75,if I remember correctly.

Forget about the buffer.

1) If the AK system needed a buffer, the russians would have used one
2) I've heard a lot of accounts of them breaking after low round counts
3) Even if they do reduce the stress from the rear contact with the bolt, some have theorized they increase the speed at which the bolt moves forward, so you get more stress there

I use a rubber shok-buff in my FAL. It's a piece of rubber, so it lasts a long time. Hasn't affected performance in any way.

Full on rail handguards might not be necessary if all you want to attach is a light. There are ways of mounting lengths of rail to polymer handguards, so you can affix your light with less weight.

Thank you Nightcrawler, that's what I'm looking for. The only drawback I understand is that the Vepr won't accept different (like folding) stocks the way a standard ak receiver will. The general idea is something handy that takes large clips, and is dead reliable.

Thank you Tracer , I appreciate the reassurance as to the Vepr's quality. Will likely go with the 7.62x39mm chambering. I can't see far enough to shoot a .223

Clange Thanks for the heads up, less parts, less problems.

I was also thinking about a cetme rifle, I really like the sights on that rifle better than the standard ak . I imagine though a cetme is big bucks. :uhoh:

Vepr IIk pros:
Very accurate for the species. Mine is a 2" rifle.
Fine trigger out of the box.
Rear sight is windage adjustable.
Stock actually long enough that it fits non-dwarfs.

cons:
HEAVY. It weighs 2 pounds more than a standard AK.
You are stuck with the factory stock unless you want to shell out $200 for an ACE unit.
The front sling swivel holds the forearm on, and is in direct contact with the barrel, so when it gets hot it WILL burn you. Also, it tends to back out and get lost.

Yeah, I suppose I'm the Vepr guy. :)

Do a search of the rifle forum, there has been a lot of Vepr talk the last few months. Lots of good info out there.

This forum doesn't go back very long. Not enough drive space I guess.

I just shot my VEPR K for the first time last week. It is a great shooter. The gun is sturdy and well made. Fit and finish is real good. I wasn't sure how good the stock would be. It looked weak and flimsy to me in the pictures, but I was impressed. It was solid and worked very well. The gun is muzzle heavy, but once I got two hands on it and started shooting, I didn't notice.

I have no idea how accurate the gun is supposed to be but I was shooting as good as I think I could with those sights. I am planning to get a scope mount and scope to test it a little more..

Mech, it goes back to December of 2002 when we opened. You can change your search parameters to view all posts back to the beginning.

Sam CAde, thanks for the mini-review, it's too bad it has issues with the stock like that . It sounds like a great rifle in need of a couple design fixes. Also appreciate the heads up on the CETME . I went to Robinson's armaments site and eyeballed the KTR-03 ,I really like that top receiver on that gun,but I'm not going to put twice the money down for better sights.

Mechag94 thanks, the gun sounds like it's more accurate than a standard ak.

Correia will do a search on VEPR again ,have already doen some research on the gun, wonderings now if the forearm is proprietary as well as the butt stock? I saw there were some group buys on VEPRS a while back,is there going to be another buy soon?

Has anyone tried mojo sights on the Vepr?

Thanks All

TWBryan

Robinson is supposed to offer replacement rear stocks at some point. You can get an Ultimak for up front. I seem to recall that one maker of rail handguards has a Vepr compatable one, but I may be mistaken. I let all my plain Veprs go after getting a KTR-03V and have not added anything to it except optics.

Grayrider- Thanks for response, have been hunting a vepr-compatible folding stock or receiver adapter, so far nothing. I really like the looks of the ktr-03 rifle ,have to wonder though if the upper receiver cover mounts solidly enough to make use of the picatinny rail on top. Lot of money to put into one rifle though, but probably the best ak available.
