OK, I've got to much going on right now to buy another rifle but I have always been interested in the Russian Vepr line. It appears that there are more models that I was aware of.
Vepr AK 47 .308 Rifle 20 Inch Barrel
Vepr AK47 Rifle .308 16 Inch Barrel
Vepr AK74 Rifle 5.45x39 Russian
Vepr Dragunov Style Rifle 762 x 54R
Vepr AK 47 Rifle Russian Heavy Duty 762 x 39mm by MOLOT
Vepr AK 47 Rifle MD2 Russian
Vepr AK Tactical Rifle
Super Vepr Russian .308 AK Target Rifle

Looking at the rifles on Atlantic Firearms AK section I see that the prices have come down a bit and the specs on a lot of these rifle is really awesome. I also spoke with Atlantic about a new model that is in the stand AK style but the barrel is super heavy, that would be available in Feburary.
If you have a Vepr or experience with a Vepr chime in. Pictures are always awesome. I’m sorry if there is an official Vepr thread already.
I think if I was going to get one of these I'd look at the Drag style vepr. Atlantic also has a video comparison with a PSL which is cool.

Hey hey, I found the new Vepr picture being posted by Atlantic over on AR15.com. Here is the pic, its called the "Pioneer". Wonder what it will cost!

bigmag, the pic you posted is not a pioneer. its a standard vepr that has been converted to a akm style confuguration. the pioneer is the one piece wooden thumbhole stock, and the trigger housing is more to the rear of the receiver

got one of the newly imported ones from tony at rare LLC (cool guy) mid last year, its a super vepr. it really boils down to which vepr you want regardless of either they are a very hight quality ak variant from the factory, researched saigas and arsenals which i skipped and went for the better quality from the factory the Veprs:cool: reason i chose the super is has the cool thumbhole stock, chrome lined hammerforged barrel,fs/gb=one piece, push button safety, and its in .308, which works out for me cause i reload, and its just a unique ak variant.
my vepr, a friend just recently modified the scope mount, need to paint black

what i wish for, if the molot factory can produce the same set up as the super vepr but in bolt action only....its nice to dream though

I shot the old RAA 308 vepr extensively. They are probably the smoothest AK style rifle, and are pretty accurate. For example mine would hold 1.75 moa. I think they are great in the bigger calibers because you get an ultra reliable rifle in a more compact action than the AR10. A buddy said my vepr was lighter than his FAL.
I also shot a deer with mine and it was accurate enough for deer hunting. Maybe not for coyotes or prairie dogs though.

Sorry looks like I got the names mixed up from another forum. Either way it looks like its build awesome. I don’t think I cannot get one.......resist.

Mr Ifit - How is it on brass when reloading? I know some of the semi's destroy brass.

i think the vepr is already pistol grip compatable only thing you gotta do is take off the thumbhole and put in the stock. Only negative part is you have to find some way to fill the little triangular space between the receiver and buttstock to make it look decent.

Other than that the handguard conversion looks to be about the same and i think you have to install a bullet guide as you do in the saiga

as for my super vepr and brass...they dont get along, actually dents them but i reload them once and i wont take a chance the 2nd time. might need to find a way to add some kind of buffer on the top cover to save my brass.

you have the slant cut receiver so you have to use an adapter to fix that, and if you want a US trigger group you have to find parts that work in that regard. I ended up using a US trigger/disconnector from one US company and a hammer from another US company to get everything to work. There was a receiver cross pin dictating a special hammer, and a bottom rivet head behind the trigger causing a different fitment issue. It can be solved. I just stuck with the russian mags in the 308 and don't know about the bullet guide issue. That 16" 308 would be a heck of a hunting outfit. Vepr was hard on brass. I would not plan on reloading much, unless you only wanted to load once. Mine also was not a fan of light bullets

as for the super veprs rear part of the receiver differs completely than your regular veprs w/thumbhole stock, the rear part of the receivers on supers are pretty much hacked up:( dont know why they did this, just a heads up

I read that Krebs no longer converts Veprs .308 to accept standard M1a mags. Do ou guys know which reputable gunsmith out there does this type of conversion and what I can expect it to cost. I think that this would make for an awsome .308 if one could convert it for a reasonable price to accept standard hi cap mags, have a folding stock etc.

I'm hoping that Atlantic has that converted AK model soon. I have a gun club shoot in both March and May! :D

CMI M-14 mags run about $26, Vepr .308 20 round mags are $44. The advantage our vepr mag has is that the bolt does not strike the follower like it would with a M-14 mag.

I wasn't aware that Vepr made 20 round mags. Who sells them? Will any Vepr accept these without any additional conversion?

Molot makes the vepr rifle, they only make 5s and 10s for the .308

I make the 20s for the vepr.. A quick google search of my user name should pull up the site..

My VEPR

I love my VEPR -- it's a tack driver and super reliable.
