Over a year ago gun owners in Australia were forced by a new gun control law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australian taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent. Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent. Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent ( yes!, 44 percent ).

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while law abiding citizens turned in their guns, the criminals did not, and criminals there still possess their guns! MANY SAY IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN HERE. I bet the Aussies said that too! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this changed drastically upward in the past few months, since criminals are now guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

WHY IS THE SECOND AMENDMENT IMPORTANT TO AMERICANS? A GUN HISTORY LESSON MAY HELP US UNDERSTAND.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and other minorities who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1970 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

DEFENSELESS PEOPLE ROUNDED UP AND EXTERMINATED IN THE 20th CENTURY BECAUSE OF GUN CONTROL - 56 MILLION.

***The first paragraph ALONE is PLENTY of ammunition (no pun intended) for a counterargument with anybody wanting the seizure of guns***

Well, it could very well be true... The Australian people are depending wholly on the efficiency of their police department. So even if the statistics are not true, they could actually become true because the people don't have the best choices for defense at their disposal.

Australian Gun Ban happened in 1996. It was a buy-back program for privately-owned firearms AND interestingly enough, over 100K firearms were imported into Australia during the same 1997-1998 buy back period.

Not only have you pasted 'quotes from other quotes', but you also moved the paragraphs around for some reason?

I have seen two sets of estimation results of the Australian gun buy-back depending on who's figures you look at.
A. 1 million of ~ 3.5 million guns were surrendered; and
B. ~3 million of ~10 million guns were surrendered

Either way, only 1/3 of privately-owned guns were surrendered in Australia, and almost 95% of them were either .22lr rifles or sporting shotguns. As it was a "buy back" and not JBTs kicking-down doors to confiscate firearms, it seems to me that there was a lot of civil disobedience in Australia in resistance to it.

Folks, I'm against gun-control, but I like to use real facts and numbers. It doesn't make gun owners look very smart to use inaccurate information.

Any Australian member of THR who can provide an update?

well, let me start by saying that I do consider registration a bad thing. However, this particular article is riddled with flaws and twisted statistics.

this link breaks the paragraph down claim by claim with the actual information the paragraph is using.
such as : homicides were up 3.2% - this percentage uses the increase in the number of homicides from one year to the next, it doesn't account for population increase
also : Victoria homicide up 300% - that sounds crazy until you hear that it went from 7 people to 19 people...in a state of 4.5 million

be careful what you quote...
