A friend just showed me an old shotgun- perhaps this belongs in the research forum- that I can't figure out. It's been in his family for generations.

It's obviously a Remington model 11, but it has no markings on the receiver other than the serial number, 47xxx, on the bottom where it's loaded.
The barrel is marked "Manufactured by the Remington Arms Company. Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A. Browning's patents OCT.8,1900.DEC.17/01.SEPT.20.02.JUNE18.03." I may have some of the numbers wrong because they're hard to read.

We're curious about age, and read about some sort of date code on the side of the barrel. The only other markings on the barrel are the serial number (same as receiver), and "A1" on the bottom under the chamber. This does not match any sort of date code I was able to find on the internet.

This thing looks old. Any info will be appreciated.

What kind of safety does it have? This can help narrow down the date of production.

This one has the safety that slides, right in front of the trigger. He has two model 11's, one was his dad's, the other was his grandfather's. The newer one (dad's) dates to 1934, according to both serial number and barrel code, and has the button type safety.

Chawbaccer- thanks for the list, but the lowest number listed (for 1919) is 199,611. His shotgun is 47,xxx. I assume this means it's older than 1919?

Also- it seems odd to me that the receiver has absolutely no markings other than the serial number. Would it have been normal that they didn't even put "Remington" on this gun, besides on the barrel?

Mine's a (just went and looked) 168,xxx serial numbered gun made in (IIRC) 1915, so that fits with what I'm aware of. Your gun is apparently pre-1915, as well. The serial number of mine is stamped just forward of the loading port on the bottom of the receiver.

It has the same kind of safety inside the trigger guard. It'll sure focus your attention on where you're putting your fingers.

Mine reads, "Remington" in script on the upper tang (where the butt stock is attached); REMINGTON (small capital letters) over "UMC" in larger caps on the lower butt stock tang.

There's no other writing on the receiver.

Remington's web site had a marvelous article on the Model 11 a few years ago, but it had disappeared the last time I looked for it.

*just checked again and couldn't find it; Drat*

If you call Remington at

800-243-9700

and tell them the serial number of your Model 11, they'll (in my experience) kindly tell you its year of manufacture. The last time I called them, I was on hold for a long time, but once you reach them, they're nice folks.
