I live in Colorado and recently purchased a rifle here. My primary residence is Colorado. However, I do all of my hunting in Minnesota at another residence of mine where I keep all my hunting firearms. I need to get the rifle to MN before my next trip out there otherwise I would simply drive or fly out with it.

So my question is this: Can I legally ship a firearm to myself(at my other residence)? Does it matter that it has to cross state lines?

box it up and take it down to the post office....

if the box has any gun identifying markings, cover them up with brown paper of tape and on the declaration form check "no" for hazzardous materials, etc... bla, bla..

it's perfectly legal to ship a long gun accross state lines via. USPS....

If I understand correctly, it's transfering ownership that requires an FFL to be the intermediary.

I've sent long guns back to the factory (accross state lines) for repairs that way.... and they sent them back to me.

note.... this only applies to long guns.... hand guns can not be shipped via. USPS

Ah - so as long as I'm not transferring it to anyone it isn't a problem to ship via USPS?

Even handguns can be shipped USPS, but only an ffl can ship, with the use of a special form:) Longguns are no problem for non ffls.

ship it from you to you. I sent a long gun for a hunt and had it addressed to me "c/o <my hosts's name>" so they could sign for it. it was a pelican case... ups air b/c it had ammo in it.

Any reason it would have to go through the USPS? Would any common carrier (UPS, etc) be ok?

USPS is usually a bit cheaper and more convienant since you dont have to go to the main UPS/fedex center. UPS and Fedex will ship for you but not from their retail outlets.

For under 4LB or anything that fits in a flat rate box or envelope the USPS is hard to beat. Over 4LB then you need to see someone else or you'll pay a bit more.

As an aside, anything sent Priority Mail and has to travel by airplane is handled by Fedex anyways (they won the contract for airmail). So if you want Fedex on the cheap, go with Priority Mail.

I use FedEx Ground for this type of thing all the time to be sure my hunting equipment is there a day ahead of time when I need it. Ship everything ahead to the hotel, guide or friend in local area except for the clothes I will wear and a carry on bag. Alot easier moving through airports, etc. without alot of gear, dealing with TSA etc.
