Man wanted on several warrants led police on a brief chase before gunbattle.

A bulletproof vest saved a police officer in a gunbattle Monday night on the Northeastside that left one man dead.

The man, wanted on several warrants, had reached the roof of a carport on Park Forest Court, initial reports from the scene said, and was shooting down at Patrolman Adrian S. Aurs when he hit the officer in the chest.

"The vest worked," said Sgt. Russell Burns, Indianapolis Police Department spokesman. "It saved his life."

Burns would not confirm that Aurs was the officer involved, but his badge number was broadcast on police radio as that of the officer who was shot.

The incident began about 11 p.m. when a person called police with a report of gunfire in the 6300 block of Farris Avenue. As Aurs headed to the scene to investigate, he became involved in a chase of a 1999 GMC. The truck had been reported stolen.

At 11:12 p.m., the pickup stopped at the end of Barnor Drive, and police say the man climbed out and began shooting. It was not clear how many shots were fired or what kind of weapon was used.

The man ran, police said, climbing over a fence and eventually onto a carport roof in the 4500 block of Park Forest Court. The man and Aurs continued to exchange shots, police said, and the man was hit in the head.

Once the shooting stopped at 11:19 p.m., emergency medical crews needed a firetruck with a ladder to reach the man, who was declared dead at the scene.

Aurs was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment.

In August 2000, rookie Indianapolis Officer Jason Thalheimer was saved when a 9 mm slug hit his bulletproof vest. He and another officer had pulled a car over on a Saturday afternoon when a man came out shooting.

The shot knocked Thalheimer to the ground, but other than being a little sore, he was unhurt. The other officer shot and wounded the suspect.

Kedrin Sweatt, 24, was convicted of two counts of attempted murder and several other charges in the 2000 case.
