It likes em hot! As you will hear in the video (makes me sound funnier than normal :) ) it is loaded with 40 grains of Pyrodex P - with a lubed wad and Hornady .454" round ball. Pretty hot - and proved pretty accurate - 3.5" at 25 yards.

I tried some Lee 200 grain conicals in it and it didn't like em - at least with the load that I tried.

My Uberti dragoon on the other hand loved them with 45 grains of Pyrodex P and a wad.

Oh, and the 58 prefers #10 caps which were snug and worked great.

Here's a pic of the gun/target:

That was with a 6 oclock hold - I adjusted the rear sight to the right a bit and now it's spot on. Love the sights on this pistol!

Here's a couple of dragoon pics:

The dragoon target shows two 6-shot groups - the one on the left was with a point of aim directly below the group on the bottom edge of the paper and the second group (tighter) on the right is off-hand with point of aim center, bottom edge of the paper - so it's shooting about 12" high at 25 yards but windage is good.

highly respectible

mec, coming from you that's a big compliment! :D

Do you sometimes find that your off-hand groups are better than those from a rested position?

Vermonter - yep, another 1858 video - I saw that other guy's with the heavy metal music for his "how to load and shoot" video.

I think I may put one together with some bluegrass or something :uhoh:

Unfortunately yes. I also shoot better sometimes one-handed than with two. It's the corrupting influence of doing most of my shooting " duelist" and not having a very good bench technique sometimes.

Great vid. Love to see the open air shooting, easier on the longs as well. Just not enough space around here.
Just ordered a Lee mold myself.
What's wrong in your opinion with the 200 grain Lee conicals?

Lee conicals

What's wrong with the Lee 200 grain conicals? Nothing in my opinion.

You will like the mold.

The 1858 just didn't like em with the charge that I used. The dragoon did - that's typical of my experience with handguns and guns in general. Many have a strong preferrence for projectiles/load levels.

The Lee conicals that I cast of 30-1 (lead to tin) alloy came out of the mold about .458" and did size down a bit in the chambers. They tended to center themselves when the ram pushed on the nose.

I'm not sure why my 58 didn't care for these - could be that a different charge volume would be fine - I didn't try 25 or 30 for example. My test was with 40 grains - guess the testosterone was flowing :D
