I finally shot my Yugo SKS two weeks ago, 7 .. no 10 months after I got it :what: I fell in love with it. Ran thru that 20 box real quick. I am hooked on these old vintage rifles now and must add to the collection. Here is my list of what I wand to add, Mauser 98k, Lee Enfield, M1, Springfield 03, Mosin-Nagant. Yes ... quite a few. But I have no idea as to what to look for at the local shows. Got some pointers for me?

It's like crack...Once you start collecting it just gets worse. I was going to buy ONE rifle a week ago. I'm picking up 6 next week. The one I went in for (a 91/30 from 1926 tula arsenal, an m38 from 1941, a Russian Capture 98k, a Swiss Schmidt Rubin K-31 with walnut stock, an arisaka type 99, and a ruger 10/22. The ones I went to get (the 91/30 and the ruger) were very nice and then I justified by their prices and condition three more. The Arisaka was basically a gift ($50) from my local shop owner, my grandpa brought two back from the war and my dad sold them when I was a kid. I've always wanted to get a decent example/shooters grade, he's hasd this one in the back for a few years.

See, just like crack. I'll be skipping lunches for months just to pay for this stuff.

-side note is that I went in to get a bersa thunder, but is was sold and I didn't want any of the other pistols he had so I blew my handgun money on rifles.

How do you like your Bersa?

Love that little 380. Goes everywhere I go, except for certain law abiding times. Thanks for getting me even more stoked about these things, my wife will love you now  Plus I just figured out I got a gung show this weekend in town, yipee!!!!!!

P.S.
As an addendum to my OP, what's a scope set that be put on that SKS I got? From earlier indications, it is a real pain to get a scope to sit right and sight in properly on those things.

Yeah, scope mounts for an SKS are notoriously bad. The ones that mount on the receiver cover are generally crap. They move and don't stay zeroed very well. To do it right requires drilling and tapping the receiver to mount the scope to it. For an SKS, I'd just leave it as is and learn to shoot well with iron sights. If anything, install a Williams peep sight and get used to shooting a good military aperture sight.

hit gunboards.com they have forums specific to each of your targets that are so in depth ya will have more info than any single human should be exposed to... literally, the Mosins will be under the collector forum, the SKS under the SKS/AK forum the K31 under the swiss rifles forum the mauser under eith the mauser forum or the k98 mauser forum...

don't bother with their search feature, its way over its head as there is simply too much info for it to sort through just ask and ya will get what ya need, also it can get slow at times there are literally a thousand online at any given hour... but it is the undisputed one stop shop for all things related to milsurps and will really fuel the addiction

I was infected over 34 years ago and am still adding with over 1400 just in rifles not sure how many handguns etc..... ya are truly doomed my friend... might as well file for a divorce now, if not married just breakup with your girlfriend, tell her she is a drag on your milsurp budget, sell off any family heirlooms now to avaid sellin em for less when ya really get desperate to get funds for that one last rifle....... sure it'll be your last... at least untill ya can produce enough plasma to sell to put another on layaway

insert manic laughter here

thanks .. i'll check out that site too.

and if you want to see pics of my sks, search the archives. they are here somewhere.

dstorm1911, you have over 1,400......rifles? Holy sweet Mary, your my hero:D . I don't think I have enough space in my house to even stack that many rifles in it.

And back to the original poster. You need to go to the Doc quick, you got milsurpitis disease starting and once your hooked it's incurable. Several of my friends would say that they are overrated, then shoot them and ask how much for one. If a man doesn't at least have a fondness for an old gun or two I wonder if he really even has a soul.

And, I wouldn't scope that SKS, not really necessary. With a little practice you should be hitting man size targets at 200 yards pretty easily which is about the 7.62*39's realistic limit anyways.

longhorngunman, we just finished the underground gun vaults and by next year they will have the new house built above them........ all just so we'd have more than enough room to keep adding to the collection, the idea is to someday have a private museum covering the history of military small arms.. we had no choice the old bomb shelter under our old house was filled up plus an 8x40 container unit converted to a gun vault so we hadda move and build to house the collection.....

its all a cost of illness known as milsurpitis I'm only gratefull to have been aflicted when ya could still buy a 1903 Springfield for $25 !! Our newly aflicted friend here is just S.O.L he's gonna have to revert to choosing girlfriends based on how much they can earn as prostitutes in order to support the habit

I put the williams fire sights on my sks. THey were a pain to set up and the fiberoptic on the front came lose from it's base and needed fixing. Now that it's working I like it, but I wouldn't suggest it over stock irons. It has been nice with jack rabbit hunting since I acquire my sight picture 10x faster. But for targets, forget it. Get the peep sights that mount to the very back of the reciever, they seam to be better.

well dstorm ... i guess i'm gonna have to convince the wife to do that then to support my habit ... or get rid of the wife, the other money drain :)
