Just fired my first rifle and shotgun. At 38 years old, that's pretty old, I'm afraid. A friend took me out and we shot some cans with his Ruger 22lr with scope and his Remington 870. I was pleasantly surprised how tame the Ruger was and also how I was actually able to shoot some holes in the cans. Yeah, I must be pretty good, I thought. Then he took out the Remington 12-gauge. Shot some holes in paper targets and then shot some skeet. OK, I suck. Out of about 30 rounds, I hit the target I think twice. But it was darn fun. I'm looking forward to getting out and doing it again.

Getting closer to my first purchases. Pretty sure I'm going to get the same Remington, and then either the same Ruger, or a bolt-action, rather than semi-auto. Can't wait. :p

Welcome!

Mendel,

Welcome to the fraternity! I think you'll be gald you got involved, regardless of when!

The Ruger .22lr and Remington 870 are two great choices to start out, also.

staring with a 12 gauge is not bad but i started at the age of 12 wit ha astevens model 49a model .410 shot gun and no .22 but the first shot is like the first deer you will never forget it
welcome

Better late than never, so welcome to the club! I've introduced many individuals to firearms, but only one of them was over 30. He was a great learner, better at paying attention to technique than most of the people I take out who are close to my own age (21). I think it was because I didn't have to "talk him out of Hollywood" when it came to gun handling.

Either way, congrats again, and have fun making up for lost time!

Like ScottsGT says it's time to make up for the slack.

I began my first 'serious' shooting at age 53 when I got into revolver/IPSC competition 8 months after buying my first revolver. Didn't come up for air for nearly 4 years, then mortgage reality set in. I'm now almost 60 and climbing the walls to be on the range as often as possible.

I hope you find the same level of enjoyment.

Lessee...I've been shooting since I was five or so...
Meh, never too late to start!
Sounds like you had fun. =D

welcome Mendel5, you have now cought our disease. just wait untill you start buying guns thats another one. once you start you cant stop! glad to hear ya had fun shooting for the first time. goodluck and have fun.

Welcome!

Those pesky skeet are much easier to hit if you place them on a berm at about 25 yards and shoot them from a rest... :neener:

Welcome to a very fun and relaxing hobby. You have a lot of tin can killing to catchup on,so get to the store and get some ammo and get after them little critters!!:)

Welcome aboard.And yes, I too wish I was 38 again. <sigh>

Don't feel too bad. I had shot guns when I was young, but as far as shooting on a regular basis,I didn't start until last year. I was 34. I'm now up to 4 handguns, 4 rifles and 1 shotgun. Hopefully the collection will continue to grow.:D

I had a ton of BB and air pistols/rifles/et cetera as a kid and had access to my friends' .22 rifles. But I didn't get seriously into shooting until about 5 years ago, and didn't own my own handguns until 2 years ago. I've learned a lot since then. You will too.

Welcome to the club.
