Visitors bringing firearms into New York, NY?

I'm starting a new job in November and will be based in Montana but have to spend about a month in New York for orientation/training prior to moving to Montana. I have a CC permit for Arkansas and realize that there's no reciprocity with the state of NY, but could I legally bring a rifle and/or shotgun into the state for the month that I'm there? I'm talking about a pump action shotgun and probably a lever action rifle. I seriously doubt I could bring a handgun with me and intend to research this further but I was wondering if anyone has faced this issue before.

In New York State, it's not an issue. In New York City, it's illegal - as you would first need to obtain a permit to possess said rifle or shotgun.
 
I'm not an expert on NY law but I'm going to say "no way". If you're there for a month you're not a visitor. I think guns still have to be registered in NY and yours isn't.

ETA: The above is regarding NYC, which I assumed you meant. No idea on NYS.
 
Outside of NYC, if your long guns do not meet the "assault weapon" criteria, and a lever action rifle would not, you're fine. If the pump shotgun is regular capacity, not extended, you're fine. No guns, even air, in the City.

No out of state hand guns anywhere in NY, they recognize no other permits.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been reading the NRA-ILA pages on New York State firearms laws. The new company will be providing housing during the training but I don't know where that will be. If it's in NYC it looks like I won't be able to bring any firearms with me. If it's outside NYC it looks like I can bring a rifle and/or shotgun. At some point I would have to travel through NYC with a rifle and/or shotgun to get to my destination and again when I head to Montana. I need to check NYC firearms laws to see if this could present a problem.
 
The best solution might be to peruse Google Maps and find a route to/from my temporary lodging that takes me around NYC. Thanks for the help.
 
Be careful if you go through New Jersey. Don't stop in that state for gas or anything. Even if you have a rifle locked in your trunk.
 
Wouldn't Federal law allow me to have a rifle/shotgun in a locked container in the trunk on a journey from place A (that allows me to possess a rifle/shotgun) to place B (that allows me to possess a rifle/shotgun). It's my understanding that this is legal for handguns too.
 
FOPA should protect you as you travel through regions with more strict laws, but that won't stop them from arresting you if they catch you. You'd have to prove that you were just passing through, probably in court.

I should know soon where they'll be housing me and will decide at that point. I would imagine that outside NYC would be cheaper for them.
 
I know from personal experience that most people in NY (city but even in the state) are conditioned to be so anti-gun that if someone (like a landlord) discovers a gun in your residence, he/she almost certainly will call the police and report you. They have had it drummed into them for years by police, newspapers, TV, schools, that anyone who owns a gun of any kind is a maniacal murderer and should be arrested or shot on sight by the police.

You are only there for a month of training. Leave your firearms at home and don't take a chance. If your luck is like mine you would get pulled over in NYC and some how end up with a felony conviction for your rifle/shotgun.
 
look up the horror stories of people traveling legally with guns, landing in New York getting major felonies etc.
 
If you forget your carry piece is in your purse or luggage and NYC finds out (like the tourist gal who tried to check her out-of-state permitted gun with security at a no-gun marked NYC landmark), the New York authorities start with 3.5 year felony charges and work their way up. There are lawyers good at fighting the charges, but they cost.
 
Given that the NYC police seem to routinely empty their guns into anybody they don't like, it is best to keep a very low profile.

as a new yorker, i say don't do it. Not worth it, what are you going to do with a shotgun/lever action in the city? The city is safe, you're only here a month, it's not worth 3 years and a felony rap that will take away all your guns for the rest of your life

I'm genuinely asking why you think it is safe, not trying to flame.
 
Personally, I wouldn't even consider it. Not worth the risk, and what would you do with it anyway? You sure couldn't defend yourself with a gun there, they'd crucify you.

First and on target I agree with those who suggest leaving your guns at home or anywhere but the 5 boroughs of greater NY.

While NYC is no longer home I was NYC born and raised. How can I call it safe? I simply feel safe when in NYC. Obviously, like any large metropolitan city there are places you do and do not go wandering, especially after dark. However, when back for visits which I do annually I think nothing of wandering the theater district at 2 AM or the East Villiage or SoHo. There is nothing to worry about when out and about in NYC. At least I don't feel a need to be concerned about my safety or well being, I feel comfortable and enjoy myself. OK as perspective I feel as safe in NYC as I do in Disney World. NYC seems to get a lot of bad rap when it really shouldn't.

I'll be driving to New York from Arkansas and then after five weeks or so driving from New York to Montana. There is no "leave your guns at home" option. The contents of my house will be in a container heading north before I set off for NY. However, I'm slowly coming around to the idea of not taking any firearms. I should probably check and see if my two Rottweilers are legal in NYC or NYS since they're coming with me. :rolleyes:

As some have posted, we are one of the safest large cities in the country, of course there are bad areas but unless you are here to deal drugs or fight gangbangers, you are pretty safe. The areas that most visitors frequent are very safe. Certainly they are safe enough to not risk bringing a weapon into town.
 
I've worked out a solution that will allow me to bring my CC handguns with me as far as Philadelphia. The route I'm taking to NY is through states that recognize the AR CHC license so I'll be ok as far as Philadelphia and will leave the firearms with a good friend there. I'll pick them up from him when I head off to Montana. The only state on route that doesn't honor the AR CHC license is Illinois so I'll be sure to lock them up in a box in the trunk before I enter that state. I don't know how long it will be before I take possession of the rest of my firearms in MT so would rather have a couple of handguns with me.

Thanks for the helping me to bounce some ideas around in my head.
