Hello,
I was in looking at riffle optics today for my next project. Putting together a Remington 700 .308 with the Remington 700 sps varmint as the base gun. Anyway I have a Vortex Viper 6-24x50 FFP on my 6.5 Creedmoor and love the scope. I'm goping to stick with Voretx again. I was looking at the Viper HS LR 4-16x50 FFP today and it has everything I want, horus reticle as well. Only thing is that the elevation adjustment is 1/2 moa and windage is 1/4 moa.

My question; is the 1/2 moa elevation too coarse of an adjustment as opposed to 1/4 moa for punching paper and steel out to 1000 yards?

Thanks!
Joe

You could make it work, but it isn't ideal. I have the same 6-24 on my 700 Varmint .308 and I certainly would never switch to 1/2 MOA adjustments (I actually wouldn't switch to anything MOA, but that is another discussion).

My recommendation would be to save up for another 6-24 FFP. That way you have the same reticle from one gun to the next, and it will be an easier transition not having to rethink the little differences.

If that isn't an option, then I would get the PST 6-24 SFP even though if doesn't have a Horus style reticle.

I did a little research and just got off the phone with Vortex. For $75 I could send in the scope and have the elevation turret replaced with one that has 1/4 MOA clicks. The reason I am considering this is that I located this scope currently on sale for $599. Hard to pass us that deal.

Love hearing any story on how Vortex consistently responds to the needs of their customers

Such great products and a phenomenal company.

$599 for the XLR reticle is an awesome price

I'm not quite sold on Vortex rifle scopes yet, love their glasses and spotting scopes, but quite so confident with their rifle scopes. I keep having problems, and although their CS is some of the best I've ever seen, I don't like having to send it in, especially when it's still new.

I trashed one of their scopes shooting it off a lead sled last summer, never has that issue with any Leupold? Another wouldn't hold zero, but the last one was all my fault after having dropped it and chipped the glass. They always take really good care of me, but I never had these problems with Leupold in more than 30 yrs. of using their glass.

But in their defense, I'm really hard on my optics. Most of my shooting is in the field, with some range time, but not as much as field time. I once dropped my rifle about 30 feet off a cliff, long story, but it landed on the butt stock fortunately. It was wearing a bottom shelf 3x9 Leupold and Zee rings, this was back in the 80's. When I took it out to the range to check zero, it was still dead on zeroed, and it even bent the objective lens bell a bit.

I am considering a Vortex scope myself. I will watch this thread.

I won't ever loan a rifle to gamestalker!

Here is the EBR-2c reticle in my 6-24x50 PST for anyone interested.

Picture is more to give a look at the reticle add it doesn't do justice whatsoever to the quality of the glass. That target is at 500 yards and the magnification is maxed (24x). Adjustments on the show have been perfect for me, and using the rocks for hold has worked just as well.

I wouldn't hesitate to use other Vortex products, and when I am ready to upgrade from this scope I will most likely be looking at their Razor line.

Ya, unless you want a real deal field assessment of your glass, don't put it in my hands. That said said, I used a 4x16x50 Vortex for my recent 9 day deer hunt, surprisingly it survived with nothing more than some deep scratches to the tube. But you should see the rifle, BTW, is it safe to shoot a bent barrel?

Nice pic allaround. How do you steady yourself upside to get on target like that?

Gee, I think a bent barrel might be bad.

Sounds like you are a Vortex fan. I am too after a request for new lens caps for my sparc II.

I also had an issue with another brand recently. Not so good. They would cover the part, but they wouldn't ship it to me. They wanted me to send the scope in. Luckily the seller swapped it out, (Gander). Very happy with Gander as usual.

I will buy a new scope soon. I am torn between the Weaver tactical, and the Vortex Viper PST ffp. Gander has both, and will price match as needed. I just can't rationalize over $1k for a scope.

I will have to join a club type range, and drive an additional 2 hours round trip. My rifle shooting outings are usually about 4 - 5 hours total going to local 100 yard ranges. That additional 2 hours will be a poke in the eye one way or another.

I got to look at some of the Vortex pst scopes at the gun show in Lewisville yesterday. They did not have the 6x24 ffp version. The glass looked good. Very clear and crisp at 24 power.

Another scope salesman at another table basically told me I was an idiot for requesting an ffp scope. I will not be buying anything from that place. As much as I would like to, I won't mention the name of the vendor.

Probably because he didn't have an FFP scope to sell

I just put an Vortex HS 6 X 24 on my rifle this past week, what an unbelievable scope! I'd never had this quality of scope before on any rifle, i am more than impressed. In .223 caliber, this rifle shot 3 rounds into "One hole" @ 50 yards, I then moved the target to 100 yards, after a couple of corrections on turrets, I shot 5 rounds into "almost one hole", one round was just cutting the other 4. I've never had a scope that I could see the rounds cutting one another @ the 50 yard setting. I'm very pleased with this scope, I'm an outfitter at Cablea's, got an excellent deal.
