Going to try and load up some 223 for an AR. Nothing fancy. Run of the mill carbine
Got a pile of 55fmj (Dogtown bullets I think)

But was only able to find 748 and blc2. Bought 2# of each.

So.. which powder to start with...

Try 25.8 gr. of BL-C(2) with those 55 grainers. Seat to cannelure or 2.23 (easy to remember!) if no cannelure. Accurate from 1:8, 1:9, and 1:12 barrels. This is my plinking load with 55 FMJ, and deer hunting load with 55 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint. (works well with V-Max also, that's my son's deer load.)

Most ball powders work better with a mag primer. If your using the #41's your good to go. I've used the W748 at one time. It worked but did not give my the most accurate load. But should meet your requirement.

I’ve used BLC2 in .223 for decades.
Preferred load is 27.0gr for 55’s. Mostly I charge cases with 26.9 as that’s what the powder measure throws.
I once loaded 500rds in processed brass with 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips for a friend.
He shot them through a 26” bull barreled AR15 with a NightForce 5-25x 30mm scope. 1/2” 5-shot groups were monotonous. I used a Lee Pro1000 press, with CCI SRM primers... seated to 2.250”oal to fit magazines.

I’ve used 26.0gr with 60-62gr Hornady PtSpt and 25.5 with 63-65gr Sierra’s.

Nothing beats 39.0gr of BLC2 under a RCBS 200gr FNGC in my Marlin M336C in .35Rem. H4895 comes close...

I’ve used several pounds of 748. It’s essentially indistinguishable from BLC2.

Both work well for that combo IMO. For some reason I feel like I get just a smidge better accuracy with BL-C(2) but they are awful close. 26.0 to 27.0 gr with a magnum primer works for me with either powder.

I would start with the 748, but that's because I am more familiar with it. It was one of three powders I could get during the mini-drought in the early-1980s; the others being IMR-4198 and IMR-3031. I quickly fell in love with 748. It was much better flowing through the meter than the IMR powders and seemed to deliver greater consistency. I know magnum primers are often recommended, but I couldn't get them and used regular primers without any problem.

don't have any small rifle magnum primers. but have a couple thousand Remington 7 1/2 though Going to load up a bunch of each this week and head out. thanks for the replies.

I’ve tried both but neither has provided the accuracy or consistency I’m looking for in either .223 or .308

The stick powders have better for me.

Regardless of my results, post some data and let us know how it works for you

In a pure twist of randomness. I worked up some W748. measured to the last case perfectly. not a single grain of wasted powder. wonder what those odds are.
