I have been wanting to get a Wakizashi to keep with me. But, reading the laws and such it seems impossible to do so. Also, I have been hearing from people that their is a sword/dagger license available to people allowed to hold a non-firearm. And at my karate dojo, my sensei said that one of her friends is able to legally carry a katana somehow.

ummm....what?

in some states, a weapons permit or license enables you to carry whatever weapon you want, like in AZ or FL, whether it's a firearm, automatic knife, or whatever. i've never heard of a sword/dagger license, from anywhere. i just don't see the practicality in carrying a wakizashi, for any reason. seriously? you could get more use out of a Bowie knife, if you just want to carry a large blade. wakis aren't exactly known for their utility use.

unless you actually studied kenjutsu/iaijutsu, for a lengthy period of time, carrying a katana or wakizashi around is a really bad idea. even performing tameshigiri can be dangerous, unless you've received thorough and proper instruction.

also, asking a "sensei" for legal advice is like Chewbacca on Endor; it don't make no sense. if you want legal advice, ask a lawyer.

why do i regret posting this?

Hailbringer,

No, you were given incorrect information and your sensei has behaved irresponsibly.

Look up the law yourself, don't take advice on the law from amateurs.

Maybe he's in the UK. People are still trying for all they're worth, to get knives with sharp points banned there. There actually is a proposed "sword license" movement, I think.

thanks for the responses guys, wasnt too sure. I guess ill just keep it as a investment/treasure

Mass market swords aren't likely to ever bring as much as you paid for them. If you bought a custom of a period waki you could have something of value.
