I read somewhere that Winchester levers eject the case out of the top of the rifle.

While the Marlin ejects out the side, right? I am not familiar with the internal workings of a lever action rifle, so feel free to enlighten me. I just assumed the Winchesters and Marlins were 'clones', like Armalite and Bushmaster or something.

If anyone has a link that shows the internals of a lever action rifle, please let me know.

I think the Marlin has an ejection port on the side of the receiver and a solid top receiver. The Winchester ejects out the top, but at an angle to send the brass sideways. Check them out at the store and work the actions to see the difference. The Marlin can be a little better if you will scope it. With the Winchester, even with the angle eject, will need something to protect your scope. Still, with a leather guard for your scope it is really kind of a preference thing, and certainly comes down to preference without a scope. Where the Marlin style matters is with the really big calibers since it does add to the strength of the receiver (not a big deal in 30-30 or revolver calibers, the Winchester is more than strong enough). That is why you see .444 and bigger Marlins but not Winchesters.

Yes, Marlins have a solid top and a side ejection port. Winchesters have always been open topped and ejected out of the top, slightly to the right. The newer (1980s or so) Winchesters have the Angle Eject so you don't ding scopes (though scoping a lever gun is kind of defeating the purpose of a light handy carbine.....). The Winchesters and Marlins mount to your shoulder differently (different feel) i prefer Marlins, others prefer Winchesters.

Actually, I WAS thinking about the option of putting an aimpoint or similar optics on one... However, a power scope for a .357 magnum rifle seems kind of worthless to me.

Still looking for some internal diagrams...

Lever Action Rifle Association. Diagrams within as well as a whole lot of other useful info

edited to add... as your eyes approach 5 decades and you find it a challenge to do the rear sight, front sight, target (running deer?), rear sight, front sight as quickly as looking at a single plane of glass... well, sometimes a scope helps just a little.

No, they arn't 'clones'. While they are the same "type" of rifle, they work in different ways. Kinda like the Walther PPK and Beretta 92. Both are the same type (doulbe-action auto pistols), but the designs are different...
