Waiting on CMP, want to verify data

Thanks for the heads up on the shop in Richmond Elkins, hopefully I can give that place a look.

Checked the eStore just now, and the rifle order (not the ammo though) is showing as "Shipped", I don't have a tracking number, but I have a serial number! It is 908xxx, which puts it at October 1942 production I think. I am beyond excited for this piece of history to come in the mail.

The CMP did a good job with my service grade Garand & Carbine. Both had muzzle & throat erosion at 1 or 1+. Both came with very dry, new stocks. I had to rub in a lot of linseed oil.

I've only shot a few clips of handloads through mine Garand. I tried 150 grain Hornady bullets over 44 grains and 46 grains of IMR 3031. I got a couple stoppages using 44 grains, so maybe they didn't quite have the juice to cycle the action. My Garand seemed to like 46 grains of 3031, and it shot them very well.

Most Win/Fed/Rem type 30-06 150 grain projectile ammo from local retailers is suitable for the Garand. I spent days fretting until I saw some pressure charts that showed the garden variety 30-06 on store shelves is loaded to performance levels within the envelope that is safe for the Garand.

Still, there is no reason not to shoot the comparatively cheap milsurp stuff from CMP.

BTW, wear more than a T-shirt when shooting the Garand. The meat tenderizer buttplate will abrade your shoulder fast... Not bruise it, just rub it raw.

Welcome to the battered thumb club.

Thanks for the heads up on the off the shelf ammo. I may purchase some more of the HXP ammo from the CMP as I burn through the initial spam can I bought with the rifle. Then do some reloading assuming I can find the components. Got a tracking number for the rifle and ammo, and the rifle should be here tomorrow, or Thursday. Of course a new thread with pictures will be done at that time.

There is no way to know if "off the shelf" 30-06 ammo is safe for a M1 Garand. Only buy ammo advertised as for Garands or load your own safe Garand loads using appropriate powder and bullets.
