I'm leaving California for good, wooohooo! As of 2/1/03 my primary residence will be Boise, ID (Eagle, ID, Ada County to be precise). Anyway, I'm trying to get up to speed on the CCW process and was hoping to find some help from the fine folks here in THR.

Here is the information I found on packing.org:

=================
Ada county process
Obtain one page application from Ada county sheriff
Complete application and return to sheriff
Applicants fingerprinted upon acceptance of application by sheriff's office
Sheriff has 90 days by state law to approve/disapprove application
Upon approval letter sent to applicant to pickup permit
Applicant goes to sheriff's dept to be photographed and get license

Documents Required
One page state application form
Photos
Fingerprint card
Proof of firearms training. Required proof may vary with sheriff's department processing application.
==================

And here are my questions:
1) Does anyone know if there is a CCW waiting period as I am a new resident or will I be able to apply right away?

2) Where can I obtain firearms training in the area that will provide me with the necessary "proof of training" and what will it cost?

3) Any other pointers I should consider?

4) On a side note, I'm also looking for work. Anyone out there have a need for an honest, experienced professional in technical CRM, business/team management, or sales? My skills are diverse, I am flexible, and I'll be happy to provide my resume on request.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm kinda surprised no one else has answered you yet!

To obtain your CCP, all you have to do is to show residency. So the first thing you do is to get your Idaho drivers license. Next, find out when and where the latest CCW class is being held. Sign up and take the cousre. By the time you have taken the course you will most likely have at least one utility receipt (gas/electric/phone) with your name and address. Your DL and this receipt establish your residency.

Ada County is kinda strange. The sheriff there does things his way, which is not always what the law says. I have a friend in Boise that has told me that this sheriff requires a certain class. The cost is around $50. Idaho law says that if the sheriff requires proof of training, you get to pick the type of training. Not so with this particular sheriff. You take his recommended training or you won't get the permit.

The permit itself should cost you $53 and this fee is paid at the time you fill out the permit application. It's really a pretty straight forward process and pretty much painless. The permit is good for 4 years.

Once you have the CWP, you will no longer have to submit to the NICS check. Ya still gotta fill out the 4474, but then ya pays cash and walks out with your weapon.

Oh, your Idaho CWP is recognized in Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

Welcome to Idaho!

I don't know about Sheriff Killeen's "proof of training" requirements, since I got mine years ago in another county, so I've only renewed my license in Ada county and never had to jump through the hoops.

The bright side: classes are offered at Shooting World, a fine gun shop with an indoor range. Good people there, good gunsmiths. It's easy to find, too; drop me a note if you want directions.

Al, DCR,

Thanks for the responses. Its good to hear that there is no waiting period and that all I need is a Idaho Driver's License and a utility bill to prove residency. :)

Has anyone out there jumped through the Ada County hoops recently? Can anyone reccomend a specific class that you know the Sheriff will accept?

Thanks again all,

Farmer
