Walk a bout carbine

I'm all about the "walkabout". Here ya go, Ruger M77 .350 Remington Magnum Short action with 20" barrel. It's a .35 Remington, 350 Legend,.357 Magnum, .358 Winchester, .35 Whelen and .350 Remington Magnum all in one. Weighs a little over seven pounds. Look no further.

The Marlin 336 in 30-30 is a beautiful and capable rifle. I'd love to own one.

But if you're looking for something else I'm partial to 7.62x39, which is basically equal to the 30-30 cartridge you're accustomed to, depending on the load.

I've got a Ruger Mini-30 and a CZ 527 American in 7.62x39. My CZ has a 22" barrel with no iron sights. CZ also has (had) an 18.5" barrel carbine with iron sights that's a real tack driver. The CZs take 5-round mags.

Unfortunately, CZ inexplicably discontinued the 527 last year, but you can still find them new in box.

The Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39 is another good one, and it takes Ruger Mini-30 magazines. The 16" barrel makes it handy and it's also a tack driver.

If you carry a 20" barrel 336 you won't lose any velocity with a 150 gr bullet in the 18.5" Mini-30 or the 18.5" CZ 527. They'll both send Corbon's 150 gr 7.62x39 to near 2300 fps. That's greater muzzle velocity than most 30-30 150 gr factory loads will do in a 20" barrel.

There are a good many factory loads in 7.62x39 these days, and if you load your own you have al kinds of options.

There are plenty other factory loads in 7.62x39 that will put down medium game up to 300 pounds or so, including black bear.

PS: Another benefit of 7.62x39 is copious amounts of inexpensive plinking ammo. Nothing is inexpensive these days, but it will be again.

The CZ-527 suffered from a severely limited magazine capacity of just 5 rounds.

CZ should have brought the gun out to take 10 round mags, or better yet to take AK magazines (an SKS charger guide would have been great).

It’s no wonder the gun wouldn’t sell with its proprietary low capacity magazines that made an otherwise nifty platform useless for self defense.

I think a great walkabout would be the Sturm Ruger & Co. American Ranch rifle chambered in the 7.62x39mm rounds that accept Mini-30 mags. Paired with a lightweight pack sling and an Aimpoint or LPVO and you’d have a handy brush gun with excellent capacity to handle two legged threats.

I am a big fan of the Rossi R92 carbines. Brother has a 16” .357 that I wouldn’t be afraid to whack a deer at 100 yards with. Incredibly light and offered in stainless. If you wanted more thump they offer them in .44 Magnum as well.

But it sounds like you’re leaning more bolt action which certainly opens the playing field to many cartridges. If I was to build a bolt action carbine I would probably stick to short action or smaller cartridges due to their slight efficiency improvements than their older long action brethren and simply because its less weight and length in the action.

.308 Win would be hard to beat for for general purpose.

.338 Federal, to me for some reason screams bolt action carbine.

.350 Legend bolt guns are plentiful and deadly to 200 yards or so.

Was going to, but don't want to annoy the neighbors BBQ's on Memorial day. Need to make sure my .350RM is sighted in. Going to take it on a walkabout in the mountains in a few days. That cartridge generates a bit of heat. And a LOT of noise! Also need to test out some new (to me) bullets in the 1861 Springfield rifle. Maybe tomorrow.

My great uncle who was born in 1898 .. he was a mechanic and care taker of a vast estate… He would dispatch raccoons , rabbits, fox, coyotes , feral dogs , ground hogs and a occasional whitetail..
In the mid-thirties he purchased a Savage 23 in 22 Hornet … that was his rife that didn’t leave his side in his truck… or when he was working around the estate .. it was never far from reach …

The far North Alaskan Natives sure loved the .22 Hornet back in the day, many a walrus and seal fell to the Hornet. Not sure if they are still popular up there.

My usual walkabout bolt-action carbine is a Bubba'd Swedish '94 Mauser with a scout scope and set up for back-slinging.
Good for walking or biking.

Oh yeah...I had a Swedish Mauser, all original, that looked like it just come out of the Smith & Wesson factory in the 1950's. What a gem. For some reason, I thought I wanted a Persian Mauser more, and did some hoss trading...dang...now I'd give two Persians to get that rifle back. !!

VZ-58. Some variations have the factory adapter for a scope mount. My Czechpoint Sporter does not - but many D-Techs or CSAs/Czechpoints VZs have them.

-- After 3,600 documented rds. with zero issues --

And despite all having milled receivers, they weigh less than the similar guns which are stamped. And these VZs are striker-fired, not hammer-fired.

The barrels are produced by Lothar, just over the border in Konigsbronn Germany.

Glad that VZ is working out for you. Amazing rifle!

Pic of my JM Marlin 336Y Spikehorn
16.25 inch barrel with a 12.5 LOP
The forearm is proportional to the barrel length.. from a distance or a pic .. seems like a regular 20in barreled 336 … the carbine is very accurate with 170gr fodderView attachment 1153122
My Winchester "de-horned" half magazine, 16" walkabout carbine. Bottom rifle. Feather light!

I know I already suggested the mini-action 7.62 X 39 bolt action but what about an AR-15 in 6.5, 6.8 or 7.62X39? Fast, reasonably light, easy to scope and plentiful follow up.

You mean like this? One of a kind handmade stock. No optics, never had the chance.

Spare 5 round mag in the butt.

The worlds only 10 round CZ 527 7.62x39mm mag, made by a buddy, from two 5 rounders, worked absolutely perfectly.

All, sadly, gone, the last thing I lost in the pawn shop before the divorce. Whoever bought it has no idea what they have.

I remember reading about this several years ago. Very nice rifle. At least you got to enjoy it while you could.

I read your OP and a Ruger American Ranch immediately came to mind. I could probably make due with 6.5G, 7.62x39, legend or Bushmaster.
I have ARs in Legend and Bushmaster an either would do great.

I really like that .. little 94

Thank you. Started out as a cheap junker I got in a pawn shop near Fort Lenard Wood. Why so cheap? Didn't work! But I fixed it, and said "what the heck" and made it into what you see. It really is very light, I forget exactly what it weighs, but it's not much. I can get three rounds in the magazine, but it's very tight, (seems to feed fine, but I don't want to take any chance on a jam) so I only load two, and one in the chamber. Being a fan of muzzle loaders and single shots, three shots is like "high capacity" to me. !!! :)

Unless something happens.. it most likely be a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39
If .. I didn’t have a crap load of 7.62x39
The 6.5 Grendel would be my choice.. but .. its a bit expensive and Im to lazy to reload :)

Well for starters dump the 336 and get a M94:neener: (and that's how the fight started)
I would be okay with a little M1 carbine. Some will say it's too light but I watched dad take everything from bats & rats to moose & mallards, and everything in between. I've done a far bit of hunting with the .30 carbine and found it satisfactory, other than finding ammo today.
