Walk a bout carbine

I have a Tikka T3x compact chambered in .308 Win, 20” barrel.
It is about a half inch longer than my model 94
Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5 x 32 scope.
It is my walk about/still hunting rifle. Weighs in at 6.5 lbs unloaded.
I painted the stock, just don’t like the black plastic look.
Very accurate and the bolt is so smooth.

Have you given any thought to maybe building your own AR? with positional stock and a 16" barrel can be very compact and light.

6.5 Grendel View attachment 1153140
I own only one AR ..In 223 and yes I have given it thought.. 6.5 Grendel is one of the cartridges I definitely have on my list .. and I can actually build a AR for less than many bolt action rifles
From what I have read about the Grendel it performs amazingly well for its size …6,5 123 gr bullets have solid SD .. Im surprised this round isn’t more popular.. but it seems today for some reason people are wanting their 6.5 cartridges to level a deer at 800 yards

I am a levergun guy but I gag a little when thinking about scoping one:barf:.
This is my walkabout gun....or at least one of them.

It is a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39.
I like the box magazines. I have 5, 10, and 20rd. (Mini 30 mags)
It is light, compact, accurate, threaded barrel.
Another great walkabout gun is a Savage 24 30-30 over 12 ga. (or 20ga).
You could dedicate one of your marlins with a low power scope. That would be pretty good too.

I have 2 "walk about" rifles suitable for big game, both based on Rem M7s with Manners CF stocks with 20" barrels. One in .260 Rem, the other in .350RM and the both weigh in at slightly over 7lbs loaded. They both also have the same scope; Leupold VX3HD 2.5-8X36 (the .350RM wears QD bases and has a 2nd scope 1.25-4X Swarovski).

.350RM:

Most "carbines" with a modern HV cartridges are still 300+ yd capable. The velocity loss looks like a lot on paper, but when you compare velocity and energy down range, you usually don't lose all that much capability. My .260 for example is has still got enough retained energy and velocity (+1800 FPS, 1000lbs) for ethical 500+ yd shots on deer with reliable expansion. The .350Rm with 225 grainer at 2730 is a 400 yd rifle. Both are great carrying for still hunting and are fantastic in blinds and stands.

When it comes to weight savings, I really prefer a bolt gun with a synthetic stock.

For a lightweight bolt action bush rifle made for trekking, not specifically a hunting rifle, with loads capable of handling many midsize issues, really hard to beat the new CZ 600 Trail in 7.62x39mm. Takes BREN 2 magazines as well. 6.1 pounds.

I actually looked extremely close at a AR in 7.62x39 or a 6.5 Grendel
But I own two SKS carbines one is a Para-Trooper
with a 16inch barrel.. the other is new …
I’ve taken 3 Whitetails with the Para -Trooper using Wolf 123gr SP .. all three were clean kills with great exit holes …

Savage Axis 2 Overwatch 308 20inch barrel
Most likely will be my pick

Savage .. good trigger .. proven design..Cerakote gray finish.. more weather resistant
20 inch barrel.. perfect length
308 Winchester.. can take any game in North America… less expensive plinking ammo available
Can always find ammo .. no exotic ammo needed .. off the shelf works fine

SOCOM 16 with a red dot cowitness and a padded 2-point sling will be easy to carry and pack more than enough firepower for anything you’ll encounter.

Mountains CAN mean longer ranges, but wooded areas can mean closer ranges... Hard to say what you're dealing with, but if you've been using a 30-30, I'm thinking long shots haven't been the norm. If that's the case, how about staying with the levergun platform, and going to something like a .44 mag? More shots in the tube, softer recoil, cheaper ammo, and every bit as effective within it's range. (and that range is not a lot less than the 30-30)

I’ e owned several Rossi / Puma 44 magnum Leverguns in the past .. even one with the big gold medallion of a cat on the receiver .. with a 16 in barrel .. light , compact.. .. but now expensive .. But Im sure the package is more capable than whats on paper… but not as capable as my 336Y in 30-30

The Ranch Carbine in 7.62x39 is great little combo ..I actually owned one for a few months.. I honestly don’t know why I traded it off .. and its still on my short list … the steel cased Russian 154gr load was pretty accurate…
I have seen a 123gr RN cartridge floating around..seems like maybe a good option..

Went on a excursion yesterday morning.. .. on my older brother’s property…. His 4 -wheeler was under the weather.. and his grandson and I actually walked :) … gave my great nephew and myself a day of romping in the woods to check up on my brothers old barn ( which has been gone for 15yrs) we always get a chuckle out of that …
I carried my old H&R 12 gauge single shot gun
instead of my 336 … when I was young, a boy a H&R 12ga was my gun.. didn’t see any momma bears .. probably.. because we were loud and laughing…. My great nephew just turned 18 .. he absolutely loved blasting the H&R .. which is his now … I have a spare.. anyway…

The Howa mini action Carbon Stalker in 7.62X39 (and some other short action calibers) weighs in at 4 Lbs 14 ounces pre-optic. I have one in 7.62X39, putting a Leupold VX Freedom 2-7X33 on for a light build haven’t got the scope yet. If light weight is a priority and you don’t require .308 punch I think it would be hard to beat.

Full Zoot 308 in a 6.5 -7 pound rifle won’t be much fun unless you really need it

Im back leaning toward a Ruger Ranch in 7.62x39
Just need a bit more dough roll to get it :)

VZ-58. Some variations have the factory adapter for a scope mount. My Czechpoint Sporter does not - but many D-Techs or CSAs/Czechpoints VZs have them.

-- After 3,600 documented rds. with zero issues --

And despite all having milled receivers, they weigh less than the similar guns which are stamped. And these VZs are striker-fired, not hammer-fired.

The barrels are produced by Lothar, just over the border in Konigsbronn Germany.

Lets just go back to square one ... ain't a thing wrong with 6.5 X 55 ... it comes in some nifty compact actions and the Model 96 Mauser action is still one of the best !
Add in that 18.5" barrel and you still have one of the best carbines ... think about it !
Gary
I actually thought of that .. at that time I handloaded .. and their was a abundant supply of inexpensive 6.5x55 ammo …
I thought of getting a carbine in 6.5 Creedmoor which is basically a modernized 6.5x55
Or even a 6.5 Grendel
