considering an uberti 1847 walker kit from dixie gun works. few reasons; 1 it will be cheaper, 2 i think it will be alot more fun to finish it myself. i dont think it will be too hard deburring it and smoothing out the internals, the actual finish itself also shouldnt be too hard once i figure out how i would want to finish it. the thing im worried about it the grips... how much sanding and shaping is needed to get the grips to the appropriate shape?

All Colt Cap & Ball revolvers had the grips installed and then the combination, trigger guard, back strap, and grips were ground/filed to fit. It is relatively easy to do. You might want to protect the frame with tape when you are working on the fit and finish of the attaching parts. My only complaints with the Dixie Walker kit are the very slow twist rifling, and the too small chamber size. Mine has a grove diameter of .468" and a 1 in 60 twist. Chamber diameters were .447". Accuracy was non-existant until I reamed the chambers to .470. It shoots .475 round balls with pretty good accuracy but that required a custom mould. Your milage may vary!
