I notice the local Wal Mart is selling Marlin 60's for about $20 less than the lowest priced NIB Marlin 60's for sale on Gunbroker. Are they the same gun?

I've wanted the legendary 60 for some time, but don't want to spend the money on a 'crippled' version.

I've picked up a couple guns from Wal-Mart over the years and I've yet to see a difference in the quality.

I'd be willing to bet your next paycheck that the internet myth of Wal-Marts "lower quality firearms" was started by gunshop owners who can't match Wally prices.

just as good as anywhere else. i have a 336w, model 60, and a 925m all from wal mart and all have ran flawlessly for several years now

Walmart buys in bulk, and can tehrefore offer a lower price on some things than pretty much anyone else, some guns included. DO NOT buy into the myth that the guns sold at Walamrt are somehow inferior to the ones you'd fnd in any gun shop. Duble pretty much nailed it..."Walmart guns" are demonized simply because they are more affordable than the identical gun elsewhere usually, causing a lot of resentment on the part of those who can't compare price-wise. There is at least ONE gun I know of that (at least in the past) is availble exclusively from Walmart, and thats a rifle version of the 10/22 in stainless. This gun is not "inferior" to other 10/22s either, but IS a walmart exclusive....

Lots of local gun shops have been run out of town not because of Walmart, but because they are like my local gun shop. Very rude, horrible service, and they go to Walmart to buy their ammo then they double the price on it and try to resell it.

I buy wherever has the cheapest price. If that's Walmart that's where I get it. You all have to remember Walmart was once a mom and pop shop too. The reason they have gotten where they are today is because they didn't rip their customers off and treat them like crap throughout the years.

If you even inquired about a gun at Walmart in my state, security would meet you at the door.

IBEWBULL , Walmart gets with the manufacturer and gets a set price . IF the retailer then wants to "make it cheaper" then Walmart stops buying it . THe thing is that the retailer becomes dependant on the high volume sales of walmart and then it is all the retailer relies upon . The retailer FORGETS about the small customer it used to have .

Okay, walmart = teh ultimate evil. Fine. Since when did they have the firearms selection to run any local store out of business? I'm out here in AZ which is pretty gun friendly. Best they have is a ten, maybe a dozen in the rotary display and last I heard they aren't doing the catalog thing any more.

Frankly, if your local gunstore is going out of business due to walmart, they probably deserve it if they can't compete with a whole ten discounted rifles. In any case, there's no shortage of mom and pop gun stores out here, so I'm thinking walmart running independents into the ground is BS...

...and more a result of your particular state's stringent gun regulation on independent operators.

Our Walmart has a huge catalog of guns they will special order you, but on those the prices are extremely high. I was interested in one and got them to check the price out of their catalog. Their price was $706, but I found it for $679 at a local sporting goods store. I'm sure the local gun shop wouldn't beat Walmart's price and I don't even check with them as I won't buy a gun from them again after the service I got last time. The deals at Walmart seem to be the few guns they have on the shelf.

I couldn't agree more. There are stores that are good and there are stores that are horrible.

When I lived in FL there was a gun shop that sold primers for $32 per 1000, and this was in 2001. Their guns were just as expensive. I used to buy primers closer to where I lived for $15 per 1000. The more expensive store ended up closing their doors, good ridance.

Really? Is that recently? Gonna have to interrogate my particular branch a bit more since they said they weren't doing that anymore. Of course, may have been just a lazy employee.

Yeah, about a month or two ago. I asked if they had a catalog where you could special order guns as I'd read online that many Walmarts do. When I asked, the employee said, we sure do, and pulled it out from under the counter. It didn't list prices in it, but had a barcode and any gun you were interested in the employee could scan the barcode and tell you a price.

Quality of Marlin 60s at WalMart appear the same as Model 60s sold through other dealers.

A few years ago, a gun dealer explained it to me that WalMart could order a train car load at a time from the factory, while he could only order one or two at a time through a wholesaler, making his markup to make profit a deal killer.

Not all Walmarts have a catalog, but most do. The one near the house when I lived in FL offered me a fantastic deal on a VX3 scope that someone stuck them with. Where I live now, no catalogs. Most of the Walmarts here do not even sell guns.

I liked FL, it was a very gun friendly state.

Thanks for the responses. I have no bone to pick with Wal Mart, so will probably go ahead on the model 60. The local shops get enough of my money when I buy handguns.

Here in Central NY, some of the rural Wal Marts do carry guns. The closest one does and has a knowledgeable and very helpful counter guy in Sporting Goods. The last time I asked, the catalog order option was still available. The ones I've visted in the more urban and upscale areas do not sell guns.

I realized that some of WM guns had problems LONG before I had internet access.

Walmart in Northern VA doesn't seem to have guns. They always had a small display case when I lived in Upstate NY, but I haven't seen any here.

My local gun store told me to hit up Dicks sporting goods for buying my 10/22 since they buy them by the thousands and can sell way under other stores prices. Have you also checked Dicks sporting goods? (although I bet Walmart has either the same or a better deal with suppliers due to volume).

I bought my Marlin 60 at Wally World using gift cards I got from friends and family last year. Looks to be the same as any other current production M60. I bought an older Marlin 60 that had some nicer wood, but didn't know date of manufacture or where it was originally bought. Local shops around here are a bit over priced, but nowhere near what folks have been asking at the gun shows for the last few years.

Ours has the same big book of guns. I have not special ordered anything from them so I don't know how the price compares to online/local prices.

I want to see what the Base PX will be asking for guns once they get everything setup. They just built the "Gun" section recently, but have not started selling guns yet.

Our local WM used to sell guns but they quit selling them about 3-4 years ago for reasons that I'm unaware of. They still sell plenty of ammunition, just no fire arms.
