U can tell things are getting from bad to worse when Walmart has bird shot ammo, if u can find it, for $28.50, including tax, for 100 rounds of Winchester.
That's over $7 per box of 25, and that's at Walmart where just 3 years ago I was paying $4.99 per box and where just over a year ago I was paying $5.99 per box.

Seems pretty understandable. Every commodity used to make shotgun ammo has increased in price the last few years. Steel, brass and oil have all increased in price and will continue to do so in the future.

When I read the title of this thread, I pictured a cartoon bird with the Wamart happy face being gunned down:). In all seriousness though, the ammo price situation is preventing many from shooting as much as they would like.

Call me crazy, but although I'm not a shotgunner I can't help but think that $29/100* isn't a bad deal when 9mm is pushing $15-16/50 rounds (when you can find it).

*Opps! Still, that doesn't change my point. ;)

I walked by a big stack of the Winchester Universals at wallyworld this morning, which in my experience are universally crap.

I buy the Federals when available (even though they are now $28+/100 as well), as I've had great luck with them. I will never buy Universals again.

It is just about worthwhile to resume Shotshell reloading. Even with shot at $50 for 25 lbs, I can do a lot better than $7 per 25 round box.

Cabelas has Estate brand (made by Federal)
Academy sells it here. I do not remember the price, but it was the cheapest stuff they had for playing at the range or non serious clay shooting.

I recently purchased Winchester AA at Walmart for $6.99 a box and didn't think anything of it. I'm not going to get excited about paying and extra 3 cents per round. Yes I could buy it for $5.99 a box if I looked for a sale but I purchase ammo when I need it.

I bought 2 cases of the ESTATE from cabelas recently. cheaper per round and better ammo than the 100rd Winchester and federal wal-mart has.

Picked up a flat (10 boxes) of Rio's from gander for $60 last week. Other than smelling pretty funky, they shoot really good.

Ammo like that is actually cheaper at Gander Mountain and Dick's
Funny u mentioned that. Just yesterday I went to BPS in Ft. Lauderdale. And guess what? federal or Winchester both at $7 per box plus tax. That's 40% Thant just 3 years ago when it was $5. Twice a year I take my 2 sons and their best friends trap shooting, about 500 per session. Range fees are $5 per volley on weekdays. Plus $7 for ammo = $12 per round X a total of 20 rounds... No wonder I'm broke!
What really pain me is that I'm introducing the sport to the next generation of shooters but a the rate things are going the expense will be too mucho for them.
