I don't know anything about Winchesters, so this may be a dumb question. Today at Walmart I noticed they had 30/06 Model 70 and Simmons 3-9 scope for $300. It was blued, with a synthetic stock. The sign said that it was on clearance, that the original price was $350 -- with scope. Am I really out of it, or isn't that a really low price for the package. I even wonder if somebody made a mistake on the price. I askedthe clerk, and he confirmed the price -- and that it included the scope. Not sure I need a 30/06, but is the barain that it appears to be? I see similar Model 70's w/0 scope, used, on GunsAmerica for $400 and up.

Grab it and run. Walmart will sometimes decide to get rid of the display models, or stop handling a certain model, and you'll get a great deal. I picked up a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe in '06 for $299 last year.

its hunting rifle accurate.

don't question it - just go buy the thing. the action alone is worth $300 should you decide to build a custom rifle some day.

I bought that package 4-5 years ago. Love it. The rifle does everything I ask it to do. Paid a little more than $300 if I recall correctly. Buy it, you wont regret it.

That is the same package deal i got but i got it in .270 with the same scope and everything I believe mine was around $325 and i am so crazy about that rifle it is by far my favorite bolt gun other than the remington 700 pss. I can get sub moa groups at 100yds all day long with the winchester, you will not be disapointed I promise that is a great weapon and a great price do it! I wouldn't trade mine for nothing.

"Is it accurate?"

An interesting gentleman named Hathcock carried one.

My M70 30-06 does clover-leaf groups at 100 yards from the bench, at least till the barel gets hot.

I don't care much for the scope in your package, but at 300 clams, you can dump the scope, buy a Luepold Rifleman for < $200.00 and still come out way ahead. Pluss you will have enough gun to take any critter in North America.

I believe that Academy Sports sells a Winchester 710 with scope in .270 and 30-06 at an everyday price of $300. Is this the same rifle on sale at Wal-Mart?

Drakejake...you are thinking of the Remington Model 710...It's based on on Remington's Model 700 action. It has a grey synthetic stock (seen it in camo to), comes in .270 win or .30-06. I believe it has a Bushnell scope on it. Walmart has them at about $300-325 dollars (at least all the ones I saw). Almost bought one but I didn't. It (to me) is not up to par on Remington's usual quality. I swear by Remington. The Model 710 is what I call a "Harry Homeowner rifle". Meaning that it gets taken out like twice a year. Once for it's recheck on zero and the second time being for the actual hunting taking place. I think this what you may be refering to....but correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey np problem...I just wanted to make sure I wasn't incorrect. lol...it does happen....alot sometimes...usually on an off day...and I have them alot....lol:D

Buy, BUY BUY

Toss the scope and mounts. At that price you can afford to upgrade your optics.........Essex

Not to quibble, but the Remington 710 is most assuredly NOT a derivative of the M700. Not even close. It's designed to be cheap to build and lawyer proof. Kind of a more modern 788.

I got one of the M70 Wins Package deals in 300winmag from wallyWorld. dumped the scope & mounts, and got a Leupold Scope & Mount for it. a great rifle. I think I got mine for @ $300 also. go ahead with no regrets. one of the best hunting rifle I've ever had. get 1" to 1 1/4" group at 100 years.:D

Is it a Model 70 Classic, or push feed? If it's a Classic Model 70, that is an awesome deal. If it's a push feed, it's still a good deal. Any Model 70 is worth two Remington 710s. The 70 has one of the best triggers out there. Any good smith can make it perfect with little effort, for about $25, if it's not already perfect when you buy it. You can't say that about a Remington.

Flynt:

I bought the same rifle at Walmart a few years ago. It was a geat purchase. I shot it a few times, and then gave it to my youngest son when he turned 18 (I got a great deal on an older Remington 700 in .30-06 as a replacement). He's experimented with different off-the-shelf ammo and found some premium stuff made by Federal that he consistently gets sub-one-inch groups at 100 yards with, off a bench.

If you are looking for an inexpensive rife with lots of potential, I suggest that you jump on it. As noted above, the weakest art of the package is the scope, but it's a great shooter and can be upgraded later if you want.

Good luck

Grab it. Winchester's utility grade rifles are excellent. It's probably a pushfeed but they work ok. Years ago they made them as the 670 and Sears sold some as their Model 53. A gunsmith friend of mine had a .30-06 slightly used with a 4X Tasco for about $280 in 1983. I paid him for it, handed him back the el cheapo scope, and found an old Weaver K4 for it at a gun show for $20.

Only thing I ever did with it was glass bed the action. I have around 2K rounds through it, mostly Sierra 168 match, and it is so accurate it's scary. I won't even cite examples because it's hard to believe.

And, no, I can't explain it. But I sure love that rifle.

The price isn't wrong it was two weeks ago friday that they went to 300, it will probably be this friday or the next one when they go to 250. Wal-mart is claiming that the various sporting goods department managers are overstocking their stores so the have shut off ordering and are now only allowing the computer to order guns to replace the ones that are sold. Part of this inventory reduction is "clearancing" some old models, however these guns are not actually clearance, you can put them on layaway and my discount card works on them. When they go down again I will buy one of the two my store has left.

I'm just going to repeat what everyone else says. I bought one when I worked at Wal-Mart in '98 or '99. With my employee discount it was $300.

Shots under 1" at 100 yards, scope does not hold a zero from year to year. It does real well even with garden varity Remington Core-lockt 150 grain at $15 a box.

Bought It!

And a Nikon 3-9 scope. Haven't had a chance to shoot her yet, but I'll take her out next weekend. I hope the barrel is fairly smooth so that the breakin is not a prolonged process. Thanks for all the encouragement; I'll let you know how she shoots.

Got to shoot her for the first time yesterday. Started the barrel break in process, got on paper at 100 yds, and called it a day after geting a 2" group. I plan to do better, but I ran out of time. In the meantime, I wonder if there's any way to adjust the trigger. It's really heavy, and I like a really light pull. Is this possible on a low-end Model 70? Thanks.
