Walmart Winchester electronic pistol safe (Granite Safes)

I picked one up today because the little ones are getting almost tall enough to get in the top drawer and my large rifle safe is to time consuming to get into if needed in the night because its in another room. It has a electronic keypad and a key override that requires two different types of keys if you need to get in this way. Made of heavy gauge steel with two very large vault bars that secure the door. I cant find anything including pictures online and the guy at Walmart said they just got them yesterday.


Its black, holds two pistols and is made by the Granite Safe company. Anyone know if these are pretty good?
 
Haven't seen it in the local Wally World. The link pictures look mighty much like the GunVault Multi 2000 that I have. The description also sounds very much like it. Electronic key pad, battery, etc., and emergency key.
 
Doggy Daddy that one isn't even close, this thing has a swing out door on the side with two very very large rods for the locking bars, and the keypad is a full numerical keypad.
 
Once again, the E-Commandos completely miss the point of the thread.

He's not saying the safe is good to keep the guns from the gang of meth head zombie al-qaeda pirate ninjas that are on their way to Middle of Nowhereville, USA to kill you in your sleep tonight.

The safe is GREAT and appropriately priced for keeping small children away from the bedside gun.
 
gotta love the E-commandos.

At least at Wally world you can return stuff for the most part fairly easy if you get it home and it doesn't seem safe enough.

get a gunvault

I bought an off-brand similar product, and it always seemed to forget what new code I programmed in. I eventually gave up and used the default code. Later, the door stopped swinging down even though I could hear the mechanism working.

I bought a gunvault and it worked wonderfully. I decided I would move the old "sportlock" and use it like it was a key-entry only lockbox. But pretty soon I found myself always trying the keypad as it would make things so convenient.

I later looked it up on the internet and saw a ton of videos of the thing placed on it's side and whacked hard with an open hand, which caused it to pop open.

I went to a gunstore that had 3 different sizes of winchester gunboxes, and thought about getting one of them to replace the sportlock. On a whim I typed in the default code on one of the boxes. I did not get the "error...wrong code" alarm, and I head the mechanism working, but the door didn't pop open. I tried a different code and the 'error' light lit up and no mechanism sounds were heard. I then tried the default code on the other two. Only the medium one opened like it should. The salesman came up to me and asked me if I liked them. I demonstrated how 2 of the 3 wouldn't open and said I would pass.


I don't know if they were granite. I DO know that if granite was good, it would sell under it's own name. I DO know that walmart is known for having the cheapest of any item type, not for having the highest quality.


I wish you luck with your granite lockbox...but I think you will find yourself in the same boat as I did in about a month or so.
 
It sounds perfectly good for the usage you describe. Even a big heavy duty safe can be defeated - or carted away altogether if not screwed to the floor or wall - by people determined enough. Just as long as the lock doesn't fail at an inopportune moment. :uhoh:
 
good for you for thinking of the kids, if it workd for you great. Just like buying a cheap tool because you need it now and can;t buy a better one right now.
 
Actually price wasn't a concern and it wasn't really all that cheap but it was convenient that I walked up on it and had just been thinking the same day I need to order a pistol safe. So far I have opened it over 100 times checking the reliability and so far I'm pleased. Here is what it looks like with the not so good pictures from my Blackberry.

Harbor Freight often has safes of similar quality on sale for VERY low prices; not high security by any means, but able to keep kids and tinkering adults at bay.

Yep, got mine at Harbor Freight during one of their sales - put it out of sight but still quick to get to if need be - it has worked fine for over 2 years - I just have made a habit of replacing the batteries at Christmas on this and other battery dependent items in the house -

hey, the kids toys need batteries - might as well take care of everything at once.... have you seen the Energizer Bunny with a sack of presents?
 
A1, I think everyone, or most of us at least, appreciate your knowledge of safes. But for many people a $700-2000+ safe just isn't an option. I've got two 14 gun Sentry Safes, well, I guess they are really residential security containers, but Sentry calls them safes. I have them located in difficult to get to areas in closets, bolted to the frame of the house, and it seems fine to me. A professional would be through them in minutes I'm sure, but in my little part of the 'burbs we don't seem to get many of those.

I would love to have a 1000 pound safe with really thick walls to store all my rifles in, but I just don't have room, and they are really expensive. So it's really a matter of need, the right answer is not always a big behemoth of an expensive safe, sometimes an RSC will work fine.

And actually I would come do my shopping for my next safe at your store if I was near St. Louis, but the delivery charge would probably be pretty high to Houston.
 
When I was searching for a pistol safe, I searched high and low and came to realize that you really can't expect much for under $500. And name brand units such as Gun Vault weren't very secure for my needs. But there were a few things that stood out on certain safes, even in generic ones. Most important were the bolt/lock strength and it's resistance to prying and the thickness of the steel. I ended up with the 9 gauge steel safe from Harbor Freight. The door is made of 5 gauge steel. You can drill a hole in the safe and secure it into a stud in your wall as well. I know it's a Harbor Freight unit but I didn't buy it because of it's particularly cheap price tag. I was willing to spend up to a couple of hundred dollars. I just couldn't find anything that was a thick and had a strong enough lock. Also, what I like about it is that the back up key cylinder is hidden. What's great about that is that it won't immediately get attacked, which can buy precious time or even fend off the burglar.

It can hold 4 pistols with their own individual wallets.
 
I bought a hand gun safe from Gander Mountain about seven years ago.
I can't tell you the name, but it has a four button keypad, and no emergency key lock. If the batteries go dead it has a terminal that you can use a nine volt battery and the default code to get into it, and change the batteries. It came with a base that can be bolted to the floor, or whatever, and you could purchase another plate and install in your car, that way you could take it with you if needed.
It has worked very well, specially if you remember to replace the eight AA batteries every year.
I know it was made in Texas. but I can't for the life of me remember the manufacturer.
It will alarm if you enter three false codes, or even if you move or bump. This was annoying after while, so I cut the one speaker wire off.
The safe gives you a warning that it will alarm, in a mans recorded voice,
" Alarm will sound", and it says this three times before the alarm goes off. The funny part is, and I don't mean to offend you Texans out there. This persons recorded voice sounds exactly like Gomer Pyles voice on the Andy Griffith show. The show where Gomer fights Barney over his right to preform a citizen's arrest. Gomer yells at Barney, " Citizen's arrest" " Citizen's arrest".
Now close your eyes, and say " Alarm will Sound", "Alarm will Sound", but say it with Gomers voice.
I laughed so hard the first time I heard this. I'm hoping that if I ever have a break in when I'm not there that we will be able to catch him cause he will be on the floor laughing so hard.
 
I bought one and I'm not impressed. :confused:
No warranty registration form for starters. :uhoh:
Can't program a new code in it and not sure what good it would do.
Using the "Factory Code" gets the green "open" light on but still have to have the key or something to get (pry) it open.
Tried to program it with key (1), keys (both), in and out!
AND the key unlocks it with or without the code or "overide" key, don't know if it is supposed to do this or not. Just a little jiggle is all it takes. Even when it is in the tampered with mode!
No clear instructions with it in regards to how it should operate properly.
The only way I've been able to cancel the alarm is open it and pull the batteries.
Tried Winchester and Granite Safe Sites and can't seem to contact anyone.
Definitely not getting my recommendation.
Looks like another trip to Wally-world is on the agenda this week for the rockymtn8ivs.
 
So far i have been opening it at least once a day sometimes more and i have to say for $50.00 I think its a great handgun safe.
