A friend of mine has an old Pre-War Walther target rifle he'd like to find out about.

I found only a limited amount of info on it, and no longer have my reference books that cover this type of rifle.

It's a Walther bolt-action single shot .22LR rifle with a 26" heavy barrel and target type sights.
He says that stamped on the barrel is:

Gportmodell-V.

He says the "G" in Gportmodell does NOT appear to be a "S", but I suspect it's a stylized "S".
Serial number is 3718X W.

He's interested in the history of this rifle and a possible value for one in excellent condition.

I have a Walther .22 single shot of that era and similar specification. It is not marked "Sportmodell V", just the Walther banner and "Walther Waffenfabrik, Zella Mehis (Thur)" along with the usual plethora of proof marks with crowns which I think date it pre 1935. I don't know anything about their model lineup, the single shots seem to sell as high as $400.

The gun KHawk links is a Model 1 or 2 semiautomatic, not a Model V bolt action. $250 looks cheap for it but at 70% blue and lacking a $90 magazine, is probably about right.

I had a Walther Sportmodel V for many years, it had a Wollensak scope mounted by a LONG deceased relative when I got it around 1970. It was very accurate. This model was referred as ' der Meisterbuche' I believe and was used in the 1936 Munich olympics where it gained it's fame and was imported to the US by Abercrombie and Fitch, where My Uncle bought it in 1938 or so.
It was SCARY accurate, right up there with a Model 52 Winchester or a 40x Remington. It was also very quiet with that long barrel and I used it mostly with RWS subsonic hollow points (which it would put into 1/2" at 50 yards)up until the mid 90's when I retired it. I sold it for $600 in 2004 on Auction Arms.
