Walther P22 opinions

I had a Walther P22, don't own it now.
Better to say nothing if you can't say something nice so I will say nothing other than I now own a Walther PP in .22L.R. and love it.

I have one and enjoy it quite a bit. I've fairly small hands for a guy my size and like the way it fits the hand. I also picked up a PK380 which I also like although I'd like it better if its magazine capacity was a bit larger.

As far as the price, you got a screaming deal! I bought mine when they were less expensive new but still paid $239 for it.

Try Different Brands of Ammo

If you haven't already, buy a bunch various brands as it seem individual P22's like diff stuff. They all seem to like the Mini-Mags (mine does too) and mine liked Blazers real well (as does my other 22 pistols). You'll just have to see what works best, and if you are a "tinkerer" go to the Rimfire Forum and look up the MOds there for the P22. Theres one that shows you how to file down the area of the slide that rides over the hammer and makes everything work much smoother. I did mine and now it handles ammo that it previously wouldn't. Great buy on your part, and a really fun gun. Let us know how it goes. :)

The P22 is a great gun for what it is. It's a relatively inexpensive plinker. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Like anything else, it's more fun when it runs the way it should. For $140, you got a STEAL.

I would highly recommend you take some time to familiarize yourself with the "P22 Bible." LINK HERE. With a punch, a screwdriver, a couple emery boards and a dremel with some polishing wheels, you can smooth it out and make it a joy to shoot.

I have a P22 (well, it's my wife's now), you should look for the date code for the newest revisions and the newer B mags IIRC. My P22 is a 2010 model with B mags and I haven't had any problems except when running Remington (Remington Vipers work good though). It feeds fine with Federal 550-rd from Wally World and Winchester bulk packs. I really like CCI Mini-Mags and Stingers in it, very fun little pistol but it has it's limitations. If you understand that it is a practice pistol and may jam sometimes, then it will serve you well. For $140 the OP can't complain.

Great buy!! If I could get them at that price I'd buy 10 of them. Yes, they have dome little quirks but in all their a fun pistol to shoot & a great training semi-auto. Ihad some feeding issues at first but a polish job on the feeding ramp with a polishing wheel on my dremel & some Mothers metal polish solved that problem. I also ground down & polished the hammer so it doesn't drag & that alone increased accuracy 10 fold!! The only ammo mine doesn't like now (at least one FTF per mag) is the bulk Cyclone un-copper coated ammo which is just about as crappy as you can get.

They are cheap & fun to tinker with. Please people get over this "Buckmark" hype!! It's a flippin .22 for crying out loud!! Why should I pay that much for a .22 when I can have just as much fun with a P22. Maybe all you braggers that think unless you pay high dollar it's a POS, should buy a P22, have just as much fun & donate the money saved to starving kids.

Good deal on what can be a great training tool as well as a fun plinking gun. As has been said, you will need to experiment to find out what ammo your particular pistol likes - and as others have said, there are few things as frustrating as a .22 semiauto that won't run. I looked hard at the P22 but ended up going with the ISSC G22 - and love it! What I especially like is being able to take a new shooter to the range and introduce them to the world of autoloaders in a light recoiling, fairly tame package.

Medic,

I've been curious about the G22 you talked about. How does it perform in relation to the P22 if you've had a chance to shoot the P22? I've been reading some reviews on them but haven't had an opportunity to ask someone who's maybe shot both?

I am one of those people that trash the P22. I had one it was the most unreliable gun I've ever shot. I had FTF, FTE, mag falling out, safety not coming off, light strikes, stove pipes, three point jams, everything else you can think of to. If I ever want a mag feed single shot I would look at buying another one. I bought more mags trying to get it to work and finally sold it for a $150+ loss. It is now the only gun I've ever sold and regret selling, I should have melted it down and done someone a favor. If someone tried to sell me one for more than smelt value I would pass.

I bought a Buckmark and I'm happy with it.

I have one and it works great. I feed it Federal bulk pack mostly, usually with a suppressor. I probably have somewhere around 6K rounds through it...just keep adding oil. My son and new shooters really like it. It is very accurate, though hard to shoot well due to the light weight.

I have drifted to using mostly mini-mags in pretty much all .22 autos, sometimes Stingers or Velocitors. That alone dramatically boosts reliability. All of the automatic .22 pistols I know of are blowback operated. Reliability is going to be directly related to if your ammo has enough oomph to cycle the slide/bolt.

I have shot a couple of P-22s, I don't recall what kind of ammo I was using, but I liked them fine. If anything, I found them to be a bit small in the grip. I am probably going to get my mother a pk-380 which is based on the same frame.

To those of you who have had trouble with you P22s but still own them, have you sent them in for repair? I understand Smith & Wesson has very good service.

great buy!

The p22 was my first pistol and I absolutely love it! Everyone I have let shoot it has wanted one. I have never had any problem of any kind with and also very accurate. I dont understand what people have against them. Made in germany, life time warranty, if something doesnt operate to your likes simpley send it to walther and Im sure they would fix the problem. I shoot less than 3in groups @ 25 yards with the 3.4 in barrel. In my opinion, the walther p22 is the best first handgun for anyone, great for small game, target, or ccw.

i have one with 8000 plus down the tube.

Mine runs like a champ. Cheap loads of fun IMO.:D
It loves the CCI Mini mags ammo. I have tried the standard CCI ammo, had a few FTF; But with high velocity ones i have had nothing but fun shooting.

Should've got a Buckmark!
98 left :D

My mom has one and my dad takes it on trail rides and has hardly jammed. Accuracy certainly needs improvement but is alot of fun to rapid fire.

But with high velocity ones i have had nothing but fun shooting.

I have one with about 800 rounds through it. The first 50-100 rounds were a little rough but after a good cleaning it fired fine... As long as you are using high velocity ammo.

I bought a Walter P22 as my very first pistol. I had to shop around to find a good ammo that didn't stovepipe. I ended up using Federal AutoMatch or American Eagle ammo without too many problems. I also found out it likes to be clean! I had very few problems with it as long as I kept it clean and used quality ammo.

It really is a fun little gun, and I shot it well, but it's not a match gun by any standards...thus why I like my Buckmark just a wee bit more.

If you stay above 1250 FPS with a 40 grain bullet it should keep running well. When I varied from that model, mine became the finest box fed single shot on earth. I wound up selling it.

I too have Buckmarks. <g>
