Trying to get your opinions on the Walther P22 handgun? I really like the style and will probably use it as a carry. I know everyone recommends above a .32, but I want to be able to shoot it frequently and bullets are cheap. I will eventually get a bigger caliber, but with the tight economic conditions I just want to shoot right now. I will also take my CCW class with this gun (If you guys recommend this gun). I appreciate any helpful reviews.

I own one. I would never carry it. It is very light and the grip is very small. It is a really good pistol to develop a solid grip and trigger pull because if your technique is off, you will not hit what you are aiming at. And it is cheap to shoot .22LR. It also has a very cheesy "toy" feel to it.

Seriously, get a 9mm if you are worried about ammo cost.

Also, you are not allowed to take CHL class in TX with a .22, but it's not clear where you live.

Very comfortable to shoot, very small as well. Mine isn't very accurate, but I don't use it as a target pistol--it's a plinker/self defense pistol. Very reliable, but ONLY with CCI ammo--everything else it doesn't like. It likes Stingers the best. Reliability seems fine, many owners have put thousands and thousands of rounds through them. I would certainly feel comfortable carrying it, but that's not the general consensus you'll get on here.

I have one it is a great little pistol for plinking but I would not carry it for SD.

Got over 6000 rounds through my P22 with no faults. Like it for plinking and range practice. WOuld never carry it because the rimfire ammo is way too prone to poorly spun priming compound, so it does not go bang when required. Plus for that size of a gun, my PF9 carries just as easily and is a 9mm +P.

I believe it was put here for one reason....and that is

Suppression!
DSC02424-1.jpg

They are cheap and what I consider disposable guns, which is why i bought two. The zinc slides are weak but mine feed 100% on all ammo when suppressed, most likely due to more chamber pressure.

I recently had a problem with my black one, where the hammer would follow the slide back down after each shot putting it into DA mode instead of SA. Well a quick phone call to S&W and I received a prepaid Fedex label in my email, shipped my P22 which was out of warrenty for 3 yrs already, and 5 days later i got my p22 back, repaired with no bill. That right there is reason to own one.:D

Fun little gun. Somewhat picky on ammo as rule, but there are exceptions.

If all you can comfortably handle is the .22, then by all means carry it.

You may want to consider moving up a caliber or two. They have a PPS that is similar as far as slide release, ambi mag release. Great gun, but in 9mm.

If you are uncomfortable with 9mm, then by all means go with the P22. I wouldn't recommend carrying it until you figure out what it likes for ammo though.

Fun to shoot. Mine is actually quite accurate. I've got about 6,000 down the pipe with remarkably few problems. Kinda finnicky, but a lot of .22's are. Mine actually likes Rem Golden Bullets a lot. Something with a shorter and more rounded bullet profile. It does feed Stingers well, but I've heard that they slap the slide back a lot harder and will fatigue that Zinc slide into breaking after a lot of rounds. I can feel the slide "slap" rearward when I shoot Stingers, so I don't anymore. I'll give the gun credit for teaching me to be the pistol shot that I am now, and I am so fast and accurate with it now that I would probably be effective with it if I had to stop someone's advance, but it doesn't stay on my nightstand now that I have a .45.

Overall, I love mine, but don't know if I'd spend the money on one again. I think you should search out a new PK-380. Same basic gun with more firepower, reliability and durability. As far as ammo costs go, nothing beats a .22, but you'll be making some potentially costly compromises because of the relaibility issues and firepower.

Mine was the only gun I've ever gotten rid of. It was never reliable, even after getting it repaired under warranty. It's a fun little plinking gun, and it is very light and small. It also has the rimfire thing going against it, but with the caveat (as you already know) that .22 LR from a pistol is below just about every recommendation for defense, I will say that a .22 that you have on you is much better than the .45 you don't have.

Obviously some people have had good luck with it, so I guess you can take your chances, you might be one of the lucky ones.

Your slide will still be made out of pot metal though :(

Lots of folks swear by the P22; lots of folks swear at them. What to do?

My suggestion is to head to the RimfireCentral website and run through the P22 Bible that's posted there. It will tell you a great deal about this Umarex product -- more, perhaps, than you'd want to know if you were seriously considering buying one. If you are looking for a throwaway firearm, comparable to the Bic disposal lighter, then have at it. If you want a quality firearm that will provide a lifetime of good service, you'll have to look elsewhere. And yeah, I'm a big Walther fan. But again, this is a Umarex gun, despite the Walther banner that flies on the slide. Umarex is Walther's parent company; it specializes in air guns. And that ought to tell you something as well.

I own one............ but searcher451 is absolutely correct.

Truth be told, I own two, which allows me to speak from some first-hand experience -- and I'm still correct. :)

That's not to say that you can't have fun with a P22. You just have to know and understand the gun's limitations before you buy one.

I bought one for my wife a couple of years ago, I was the single biggest piece of junk I ever bought. I sold it for a $150 loss and fell sorry for who ever bought it.

Obliviously, I wouldn't recommend using one for for carry, I wouldn't even recommend one for plinking. Unless of course you wanted a single shot.

It's a fine gun, if you like the fire controls and ergonomics in a .22 LR pistol. It's not the most accurate thing out there. I wouldn't carry if for a SD gun. Neglecting caliber deficiency, it's cheaply made and toyish.

Yes, I own one.
