Okay, I can't decide. Should i get a walther P22 or a SP22? Uses are plinking, a little target shooting, and close range varmint control. Eventually, a suppressor will go on either one.

Thanks.

To be honest the SP22 is just too ugly for my tastes:barf:

The P22 may have its faults but at least it looks really cool:rolleyes:

Still the P22 I owned never lived up to my expectations which is why I got rid of it after a few months.

Mainly they are made out of pot metal. It's been discussed often here, and there are a few pics of broken slides.

I got rid of mine due to my concerns.

My P22... or should I say my wifes P22 is still going strong with no problems. Like anything else you will get good and bad examples. I happened to get a good one and haven't had any of the issues you will read about.

P22, the ONLY gun i ever sold. I really thought i wanted one until i bought one. A year later after F&B, a lot of reading on the rimfirecentral site, i bought a ruger and got rid of the walther.

It's important to keep in mind that the P22 is a Umarex gun and not a true Walther. Umarex is the parent company that took over the Walther name. Comparing the P22 to, say, a PP or a PPK or a P5 or P88, or even a P99, is like comparing a Mercedes to a golf cart.

Umarex makes the P22 BB gun.

The Walther P22 .22 caliber is Made in Germany by Walther and Imported into the USA by Smith and Wesson.

VE2RF: You might want to check the Walther Forums. The P22 is a Umarex gun, pot metal and all -- regardless of what they stamp on the slide. That's one of the primary reasons why they have had so many ongoing issues with it.

Yeah well

Umarex is the parent company of Walther.

Umarex makes a 9mm gas alarm pistol (blank firing pistol), of which the P22 is an adaption. Also called a PAK pistol if I remember correctly. The P22 is not really a Walther, and it is a shame it has Walther's name on it.

Wrong. Umarex does indeed make the P22 .22LR.

That said, I really liked mine. The only reason I ended up selling it is because I don't ever really shoot it anymore and I could use the money.

I know they have a reputation, but there are also a lot of very opinionated folks on the internet who will talk smack about a particular product at the drop of a hat, whether they have personal experience with it or not. All info (mine included) is always to be taken with a grain of salt.

searcher451 is correct.

I can vouch for Uncut on the Walther Forums (see link above); he knows of what he speaks, he's visited the Walther plant in Germany, and I'd trust his opinion most any time out. He's also a fine gentleman.

All you need to know about the P22 and Umarex is that, despite a ton of issues, the gun is still made of zinc (pot metal), which is about as bright as trying to make a car out of tin foil. Walther makes quality firearms -- has for decades. The P22 is hardly a quality gun, despite the fact that it can be a fun range plinker.

Hand Size

The P22 has a very small grip. For most men, this basically makes the P22 worthless. If you have average man sized hands, get the SP22. In addition, if you want more of a target shooting gun, get the SP22. The P22 is really a tiny little toy plinker.
