What do you think of the Walther P22 22LR 5"; rate it from 1 - 10, please explain, I'm looking for good input.

I love mine!

This pistol has gotten mixed reviews from a lot of people, but mine has been great from day one. Eats anything I feed it. It does need to be kept fairly clean....I clean mine every 3-400 rds. They only sell for about $200 in my area and well worth it. My eleven year olds love thios pistol...it fits them perfectly and it looks like a serious gun. I would give it a 9.

My 3.4" is ok, now. I had to send it off and had the mags replaced as well as the recoil spring. I love this gun, however, I can't feed "just any ammo."

As long as I feed CCI Mini Mags, I get zero problems.

Win. Wildcat - More than 50% Fail-to-Feed/Fire/Eject

Federal - ~20% of the ammo gives problems

Rem. Thunderbolt - Less than 5% problems

Did you know? 38% of all statistics are made up on the spot? ;)

3.42" P22

Overall, I'll give the P22 an 8 out of 10.
It's not a precision target pistol, but it is Not meant to be one.
It is a fun & affordable plinker, with combat style sights, 75% scale to the P99. Reviews indicate that you do not get much more accuracy with the 5" version, and from my experience using both, I would have to agree.
I used my P22 3.42" to qualify as an NRA Certified Instructor a couple months back. It was the only P22 there. Other instructor candidates had high Stds, Model 41's, Smith 22A's, and a handful of Smith & Ruger revolvers. (on a side note, it looks great with my P99!)
Now my P22 did have some quirks. It went back to Walrep in Jan '03
What they did (8 days door to door):
1) replaced the Safety (nice and tight now; was kicking on sometimes)
2) replaced firing pin spring, was weak (lite strikes)
3) shaved the top of the hammer, nice clean job (for the FTF)
4) checked the -A mags
5) checked feeding of HV ammo

Ammo:
American Eagle HV & Thunderbolts stayed in the black at 50ft.
CCI GreenTag is very tight. CCI Stds ok.
CCI Minimags, Velocitors & Stingers work fine, but can be unpredictable (peppering target).
Federal Bulk pack HV, no good (not enough powder charge or something to cycle)! Remington Bulk HV Goldens work fine, when you don't get duds (cheap stuff)! Winch Wildcats don't work. I've tried other ammo, but the facts escape me at the moment.

After trying my P22, 3 friends went out & got theirs. The 2003 built P22's seem to have fewer or no problems. My friends have had Zero issues.
I have seen no more issues since the Walrep repair work.

I've only had one opportunity to shoot one & only 100 rounds. But, it was fun to shoot & no hiccups along the way. I've also noticed that the price has come down a little too.

P22 Price

Around here, it's the same as last year,
P22 3.42", $239
P22, 5", $289

Last year there were waiting lists, backorders.
This year, there are plenty around.

I'm plunking my $$$ down at lunch for a P22 with an AAC suppressor. Very cool - took it out into the back parking lot of the shop and fired a few rounds into scrap rubber from the range. The loudest sound was the slide cycling!

Them durned squirrels on my bird feeder better git outta town!:D

techmike.. Thanks for the info, I aksed this question in another post and the P-22 came up a few times. Im looking at this gun for my 11 yr old son, and it looks like you anwsered my question.

Now to fid one...

You will be your son's hero!

My kids were only interested in shooting in passing until I got the p-22 and now my Daughter doesn't miss a trip to the range. I don't know if you Have Uncle Lee's stres in your area, but I got my P-22 there for $209.00 I also have an aac supressor on the way...the only way I could think of to make that gun more fun.

Mike

Hey, about suppressors, I know they're NFA items, do you still have to go through all the stuff you have to for a machine gun, if so, do you only have to do it once or for every one?

You only do the paperwork and $200 tax once for each suppressor.

Stupid law - no reason to it whatsoever.

i have a P22 with the 5 inch barrel, and (dont laugh at me) i'm still having a tough time learning how to be accurate with it. i think i'm mashing the trigger really bad, and when i slow down and pull the trigger deliberately, my groups tighten up a LOT.
oh yeah, it also took me two range visits to figure out which way the safety should be flipped for it to fire. i felt like a complete dumb*** when i realized it wasnt firing because the safety was on. it also takes me two tries to figure out which side is left and which is right. :neener:

now that i figured all that out, i have fun with it. last couple range visits i've put at least a couple hundred rounds through it.

my gripes with the p22 are as follows:
first three rounds the ejected brass hits me in the forehead, and once its flown over my head and down the back of my tucked in t-shirt. that day i learned that with enough motivation, i CAN dance!
some ammo throws out primer material that usually finds its way on to my forearms. about as hot as the brass is.
the nut that holds the 5 inch barrel in place (its a 3 piece set) works its way loose a little bit with the fake compensator in place. needs some loc-tite or something like that. i've been shooting it with the fake compensator removed and manually tighten the nut after every couple of mags.

overall i like the pistol, i'd give it a 7.5

Blue loctite

I've heard that some people have tried the Blue Loctite with success.
I have not needed to. I just tightened while the barrel was still warm, and it's been fine since. But, good idea to check it at cleaning, and the stove bolt as well. The philips head stove bolt is the one on the side, access by slide removal. (more like a "stove screw" to me)
Anyways, for all this, Do Not overtighten!!

I'm on my second Walther P22 Target. The first one stopped firing after about 200 rounds. I took it back to the vendor who replaced it without an argument and under 5 minutes...

The repalcement pistol however has function flawlessly through 1000 rounds. This new one doesnt seem to have any issue with specific ammo either. However, yesterday one of the screws holding the compensator flew off while shooting. The screw is lost in a pile of brass :( (The range I go to never sweeps the brass off the concrete)

Another complain I had is the metal rod that is next to the "S" on the safety seems to be coming out. It hinders the latch going from safety to fire. Not easy to put back in either. To be honest, I just left it alone when I found out the safety still functions.

Overall, I love shooting the pistol. Shoots great and ammo is cheap. I just wish the pertinent parts wouldnt come loose.

Overall I'd give this pistol a 6.5 because of the screw that came flying out and the first one stopped firing.

I'd rate my 5" version about an 8. I love the look, fit, and feel of it but it has more quirks then my S&W 422. If I have the slide locked back when I insert a magazine it will fail to feed correctly, a little bar above the magazine well hits the back of the round and forces the nose up too high. If the slide is closed it functions just fine though. The screw in crown of the barrel tends to get loose on me also, but if I wasn't lazy I could fix that with loctite. It's picky about ammo too, the only brand that I've tried so far that functions perfectly are the Winchester bulk packs. Other then those things it's a great gun, my wife loves it and it's going to be a great learning pistol for my boys once they're old enough. Definitely not a match grade pistol but a good one nonetheless.

I got it because it just looked neat... I kept it because it is just fun to shoot.

When I take new "gun people" out for their first time on the range... I take several guns with me for them to try out - almost every time, the hands down favorite is the P22 and I have to tell everyone of them that can't buy that one from me, they need to buy their own...

Trigun

You want a neat looking gun, you should get the Trigun by Mateba. I saw it on a cartoon, "Trigun" by the way. I thought it was just made up since it looked fake; the hammer was on the top of the gun and the barrel was on the bottom; I looked it up and apperently there's a system of mechanics that actually lets it shoot. I would like to have one just for the sake of having such a unique piece, it's very rare though, you should check it out.

P22

I introduced some 6 or so co-workers last year & earlier this yr to the Shooting sports. I started each off with the P22. One young lady from AZ (former gun owner there, so not a new shooter), decided she liked firing the P22 more than any larger caliber, so she stuck with that!
A couple others went out & got the required training, got licensed, and purchased P22's, 3.42" & 5".

9-
(5" model)

LOVE MINE... other than the occasional bad round, mine eats just about anything I buy, iwht is mostly REM 38gr Brass JHP (Hi-Vel) or WIN 40gr lead nose Thunderbolts....

miatchguy,

Although the gun in "Trigun" is vaguely based on a Mateba revolver, it is not a real gun.

Yeah, I looked it up, someone said it was, I thought he meant it was manufactured by Mateba but it turns out there were just some, umm, "very dedicated fans";) is a nice way to put it, that built a few of replicas.

I've got the short barrel version.
I just posted a range report on this forum.

I love mine!:D
It is not ammo-picky at all, which is what I was worried about.
Everyone that has shot it or handled it has been really impressed.
Two daughters and a neice really liked it.
I just got mine, so it would appear that some of the early problems have been rectified.
I've got to check my notes, but I've got somewhere around 500 rounds through mine.

Some of you guys have great prices in your area.
Mine was $249. :(

I would give it somewhere between 9 and 10.
