My LGS has a walther p38 post war Supposedly a German police gun with the original holster in beautiful shape for either 349 or 389 I can't remember for sure. Deal or no deal. I know some of the surplus sites have P38's for sale but after shipping and transfer I think the price would be the same and at least I can handle this one personally.

I have one of those pistols made in 1958. Mine is very accurate but picky about some hollowpoints. It is a clumsy gun to carry concealed. The DA trigger sucks but after the first shot, it is fine. I use mine for a truck gun. And it would be fine for a bed-side gun. For $389 you could probably get a more versatile piece, but if you want a P38, then get one.

Post war unless it is early will have an aluminum frame, look and see if it has the upgrades ie: hex bolt added to strengthen the frame and the fat slide (beefed up).

Most recommend either 115 or 124 grain bullets and nothing hot.

I picked up a P1 late mfg with all the upgrades, extra mag and holster for $325 last weekend in 99% condition. They are out there, read up on what you are getting.

I have one made during the war---If it looks good --buy it---price is not that bad.
One day I finally took mine down to have it registered so I could take it out of the house.
The cop didn't know what to do--no name or mfr. on weapon---after about 10 cops the captain finally registered it---they took a photo of the markings on the gun.
It's a nice little weapon for home defense.................

Right after I picked mine up - I stopped by a local range and put a box of Federal 124 FMJ through it. The pistol functioned flawlessly and was key-holing shots at 12 yards. I have been very impressed so far.

I have been really surprised at the accessories still available for the gun. I ordered a set of Walnut grips for off of ebay and found another site that has surplus mags http://www.keepshooting.com/firearmaccessories/magazines/german-p1-p38-mag.htm for $15.95. The surplus mags are a real bargain even if the springs have to be swapped out. Midway carries the Wolff P38 Magazine spring for $7.29 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=335865

My P1 has all of the upgrades and I picked it up for $350. I consider it a steal. It's an amazingly good shooter. If you decipher the stamps you can follow it from date of manufacture all the way through various arsenals/re-arsenals and upgrades. Each gun has its own story to tell. Mine looks pretty much like new.

??? Flawless should be easy enough. "Key-holing," using it as the locals do (sorry about that), I've seen it used differently, so I guess the confusion is warranted. One on top of the other. Had a group roughly 2 inches in diameter, one hole.

A couple of years ago, you could pick up surplus P38s and P1s in LNIC condition for just under $300. No longer -- those deals are long gone, sad to say. If you can get a nice one for under $400 these days, you are doing well -- and they truly do make terrific shooters. Wait till you take it to the range for the first time and the brass starts ejecting to the left; you'll get lots of interesting looks from shooters down the line.
