Hi Guys,

I received a call from the local gun shop owner today and he says that he's got a great deal waiting for me and would like to talk to me about it f2f. So, having the morning free, I drop by his shop and he says that he has a second hand walther semi-auto for sale. The previous owner has apparently bought the piece 5 years ago and has so far put 5000 rds through it. He shows me the item and here is what I see:

i)A walther P88 9mm pistol in apparent good condition. I strip the piece down and the barrel threading seems to be okay and not worn down. The recoil spring seems robust. Double action trigger pull resembles a revolver in pull weight but is consistent. Single action trigger pull is light and also consistent. The only problem seems to be rust stains in the magazine well area.
ii)The original manual, box and barrel cleaning rod is still present along with 2 15rd blued magazines. One magazine shows small rust spotting.

Alright....my questions are:

i) What kind of reputation do P88 Walther semi-autos have? Do they have a reputation for good quality control, accuracy and reliability? It is my understanding that it is a discontinued model. How does build quality compare to the Walther P99?
ii) To all P88 owners: How do your pistols fare with a diet of JHP ammo? Does the P88 feed reliably with most cheap JHPs? Does it accept HPs from CCI, Magtech or Winchester?
iii) With a diet of 9mm FMJs, does the P88 deliver SHTF feed reliability? In other words, can I fire off 150 FMJ or LRN rounds, not clean the pistol, return 48hrs later and expect it to shoot off another 100rds without a failure to feed?

Lastly, the gun shop guy is priceing this P88 at the equivalent of US$500. Is this a fair price?

Well comparing it to the P99 isnt a relavent comparison in my mind. The P88 is the grand daddy to alot of double action guns........the Bersa Thunder and the likes are modeled after the gun. There are no issues with reliability Im aware of...Im not a P88 Pro by any means but Ive shot a couple. From what Ive seen around here 500$ is a very good price on one in good shape........
Shoot well.

The Walther P88 is considered one of the best or perhaps the best "Wondernine". I think $500 is a very good price.

I had purchased one NIB in the very early '90s for $900 OTD so $500 used sounds OK.

The gun, IMO, is extremely well made. Very tight tolerances. IMO, maybe too tight. It feeds ball fine. I have had some misfeeds with some hollowpoints due to the ogive and open mouth. Don't recall which ones I tried as it was a long time ago. Now this is my gun and the one you are looking at might do better since it has 5K rounds through it to loosen it up a little.

To compare, my Bersa Thunder9 (and FireStorm Mini9s) feeds everything fine.

Only minor drawback of the P88 for me is that the grip is just a tad too wide for absolute comfort on top, the area between the knuckles of the thumb and forefinger (the web area).

Okayyyy..

So most of you guys seem to think that the P88 is a decent pistol. Not having test fired the piece I think I can accept that opinion for now as I respect THRers like yourselves.

However, I would still like to know,

1) Is 5000 rds considered too much wear in a used gun to accept? In other words, how many more rounds can I expect to run through the piece untill I need a barrel replacement?
2) Any other P88 owners load their guns with hollowpoints? Which brand of HPs feed reliably?
3) Any opinions about FMJ reliability in the P88 w/o cleaning? Can it shoot 100rds, and shoot another 100rds 48hrs later with no FTF without any interim maintenance. I am assuming that the P88 was spotless to begin with.

the barrel threading seems to be okay and not worn down.

Is this an extended barrel intended for a suppressor application?

$500 for a P88 is an exceptional buy if the piece is in good condition.

Let us assume for a moment...

....that I do decide to get this P88. Since the P88 isn't a common pistol, what holsters made for other handguns will likely fit the P88? (For example, a holster made for a 9mm Model 92 baretta will fit a CZ-75B.)

Please tell me the phone number of the gun shop that has the P88. Because if you don't buy it now, I will. Don't worry about the holsters. Eric Larsen (HBE) will make you one for a good price if you can't find a holster. Just get it.
