I have a 9mm Walther P99 A/S compact (and a fullsize). Everyone online knows how much I love the fullsize - as I comment on it incessantly.

However - on the compact, I wish the backstrap was a tiny, tiny bit longer. I noticed that on the XD subcompact - the backstrap is a tiny bit longer. I also don't need a grip extension on the mag to hold it comfortably.

My local range had a bunch of XDs for rent - so today, I took my P99c and shot it head to head with the rented XDsc 9mm.

The XD does feel nice in the hand. However, the range only had the extended mags to shoot with - so I could not shoot the gun with the shorter, more compact mag.

When shooting both - I shot well with the XDsc. ALMOST as good as I do with the P99c. Another interest in the XDsc was that every shot is the same, where the P99c is DA/SA. The DA is pretty light on my Walther however. And, at 1 handed shots in DA at 10 feet with my P99c, I did about as well as I did with the XDsc.

Now - it may not matter to some - but I tried loadeding the XD, and then removing the mag - to simulate what the grip would be like with just the short mag (instead of the extended mag). The gun failed to eject and would jam EVERY time the gun was fired w/o a mag. Aftter a few times of this - I tried shooting the Walther w/o a mag (I'd load 1 round from the mag and then drop it).

The P99c NEVER failed to cycle with no mag.

So, if that test is important to someone... There is the info... I'm not sure it would stop me from buying an XDsc if I really wanted one. I just found it interesting...

Anyway - if I didn't own the Walther, and I was looking at the XD - I'd probably get it. But being that the guns are so much alike in size... And, despite the shorter backstrap on the Walthher, I still shoot it better...

I don't see the point in spending nearly $500 (the gun +tax for a 2 tone one) for the XD.... I thought I had found my next gun... But, I think I'll pass, at least for now...

The XD and a Beretta Cheetah had been the 2 next guns on my list (the Cheetah is just a gun I've wanted to own for the past 5 years - and I did get to shoot one 2 weeks ago)... I think I'll buy the Cheetah next....
 
I needa hold one a few more times - The backstrap isn't any longer than the P99c... We'll see :p

My money? Hahaha. I get $50 a month now towards a gun allowance + plus whatever I get from my birthday and Christmas. Typically, I have to sell something to buy an expensive gun (I sold my Sw99 and used some cash to buy my FN Five Seven - and a telescope and a Beretta 90-Two that I won paid for my PS90).

It does look like the PPS is a tiny bit longer.

Someone on the Walther Forum did something interesting. He managed to put the medium backstrap from the fullsize onto the compact - and he drilled a hole thru the backstrap to make it work.

I have an extra medium backstrap. When I get home I'm gonna go look at this and see how it can work.
 
Well, never mind on the fullsize backstrap.

I looked at it now that I am home. To cut some of it ff and make it look nice, along with drilling the whole - I could never do it and have it look good... I don't have the skills to work with plastic like some guys...
 
I've never seen a P99c in person, and was about to buy one to keep the full-size company. But then I chickened out and ordered an XD SC the other day. :uhoh:

After renting one at the range, it seemed like the bore axis would make it less flippy than the P99c. The dovetailed metal sights and being nearly a half inch shorter helped too. I love the P99, but for some reason the thought of the front sight popping out while carrying it worries me.

The 16 round extended mags for the XD SC are a nice bonus too.
 
I have dropped P99s in the past - sights NEVER come off.

Embarrassing as it is to admit - I had a prev fullsize P99. My fav gun. I dropped it and damaged the frame by the rail on 1 side. The plastic sights can get dented, but they do not come off.

Walther USA wanted $500 for a new gun - they don't have frames only to sell.

I ended up selling it for $400 to someone who wanted a beater gun - and then I bought another one (I wasn't gonna spend $500 MORE)

Anyway - those sights stay on
 
the PPS on the right is single stack. PPS's are available in 9 or 40 and only come with the QA system, not AS (da/sa/).

For the least muzzle flip with the lowest bore axis in the same size package as the P99s and the XDsc see if you can find a Steyr S9 or S40. I love mine, best polymer compact hands down in my book.

Course a P99c in the AS 9mm variety would sit next to it if i won the lottery tonight.

When I first picked up a P99C it just didn't feel right in the hand because of the short backstrap, so I didn't buy it, however, the next time I went to the gun shop, I bought it because of all the positive reviews, light weight and compact carry size with 16+1.

This is the only new gun that I was ever reluctant to buy, but bought it anyway, it was the best gun purchase I ever made. That is until 3 weeks ago when I bought the full size P99 in 9mm.

What's not to like:

* Unbeatable accuracy
* DA/SA, Decocker like my second favorite firearms, Sig. P226/9mm & Sig P220/.45
* Bought a 16 round mag with grip extension
* Best of all, 18.7 oz. empty

I used to have a P99 A/S (fullsize .40s&w) and two XDs (4" services, one .40 and the other .45). Neither were the "right" gun for me so I sold them all, but if I had to pick one I'd say I liked the XD more. However, if I got the P99 in 9mm I'd probably still have it today.

XDs don't eject the round properly when you take out the magazine. I remember with both of my XDs, whenever I'd chamber a round and take out the magazine to practice clearance drills the same thing would happen to me. I'd retract the slide back quickly, but the round would just fall through the grip out the bottom of the magazine well. I could never figure out why they do that.
 
I'm fortunate in that my hand fits the larger of the two 99 series compact inserts very well. Not as well as my 3913 or CS9, but well enough to suit my needs.

The plastic front sights of the 99 series don't use a wedge like another brand, but a screw. It screws up into the sight and holds it fairly well. I've never had a front sight come off, although I've had a couple of rear sight bases come loose when the rear sight base plungers experienced breakage of one of the ears which bracket the head of the windage screw. Granted, I've only had exposure to 50+ SW99/P99 pistols which I helped maintain and support. I've been told you can overtighten a front sight screw and screw one right through the top of the post, though. Never felt like trying it to see.

Having an extracted empty case fall down into and through the empty magazine well of a pistol in which no magazine is present isn't an unusual occurrence. I learned that when I was young and first learning to shoot Colt .45's. ;)
 
I've got a full-sized P99, a P99C, a PPS in 9mm, and another PPS in .40 S&W. Truth be told, I would't trade any of them for much of anything on the market. Walther makes remarkable (and certainly reliable) firearms.
