Hey guys,

I've been looking closely at the Walker PPK/S bb gun as a good little informal practice gun, so first of all, has anyone used one of these before? Did you like it? I also planned on carrying it when I'm jogging as kind of a "Mean doggy deterrent" ;-).

Second question, what are the laws (especially in MIssouri) for discharging bbguns in residential areas? I was hoping I could set up a little target in my backyard and plink away happily with it. What do you guys think?

The PPK is very low powered. High 200's in the FPS department on a good day. I wouldn't use it against ill-tempered canines because it'll probably just make 'em more ill-tempered.

For plinking, get a decent airsoft pistol. It'll be more realistic and less likely to get you in trouble (it also can't break glass at any decent range - no shot out windows) and will be miles more accurate than the PPK.

Shooting a big angry dog with a bb pistol is about as smart as trying to fend off a drunken Mike Tyson via bi*** smacking. Its like muscle car guys say, no replacement for displacement. There are a bunch of threads about dogs. Read them.

On the subject of PPK air pistols, I wish I'd shot one so I could tell you all about them, but I haven't, so I won't be a common internet forum imbecile and run my mouth pretending I have. :scrutiny: Can anybody else tell us of their experiences with these things?

Aye, this topic's been brought up before and I've waxed lyrical on it myself each time.

I've owned a whole pile of those things over the years. Bottom line is that they're a lot of fun to shoot but very low powered and not very accurate at all. They're short smoothbore barrels and fire BB's only, so you get no rifling and the usual musket style whiffle ball effect. I've found that Gamo Perfect Rounds (lead BB's) have the best accuracy but obviously the worst velocity out of the PPK. Daisy MaxSpeeds are the best compromise, and the Copperheads the gun comes with are ironically the worst ammo you can feed through the thing.

If you want blowback with a little more accuracy and power, look into the Crosman/Umarex/Walther CP99 Compact. If you want good power and accuracy in a BB pistol, look into the Crosman single shot CO2 guns, the CB88 (I think that's what the model is - the metal framed 1008) or the regular (not Compact) CP99.

It would be your city's rules on whether or not U can fire it in the city limits.

I am waiting to hear back from my city - I called yesterday to ask about this because of snakes.

I was gonna get one of those PPK ones myself for this - from what U are saying about its accuracy, though, maybe I'll look at something else. I don't wanna spend more than $50. And, a pump would take too much time between shots I think. Maybe one of those crossman revolver airguns?

Note that most repeating CO2 pistols are revolvers, though they may be dressed up in auto looking frames. The CP99 and Sport, for instance, as well as the Crosman 1008 and others that exclusively fire pellets generally have a revolver mechanism inside that takes little removable round clips, holding 8 or 10 shots. Most are SA/DA of some variety and can be rapid fired with a horrible trigger pull or single-fired by cocking the hammer first for a halfway decent trigger pull.

I've owned a stack of Crosman 1008's and found them to be satisfactory, power and accuracy wise, for dispatching of small pests such as rodents, pest birds, and snakes at close range. That is, inside 20 feet, often less. If you want to reach out beyond that you really want an air rifle.
