i was looking at one yesterday. New Model in Stainless. i like it, but have a few questions....

what are the main differences between the PPK and PPK/s?

is $514.95 a reasonable price?

thanks

The difference:

The PPK is the original design, somewhat improved.

The PPK/S is a PP frame with a PPK slide, so it could be imported to the US of A after the "Interpretation" of the Gun Control Act of 1968.

I would recommend something more modern, as there are better guns available now.

Which is $475 MSRP. Smaller in 9 x 19mm.

Who didn't like the twisting recoil of the PPK/S and traded it for a Wonder nine, Sigh didn't like that one either.

$514 would be too high in my area for a S&W-Walther.
If you must have a PPK or a PPK/S (and if you collect handguns, you must), browse the gunshops' used gun counters, pawnshops or ads looking for an older model PPK/S (the ones imported by Interarms are still found), but I'd be looking for a post-war (brought in before '68) blued model PPK (much harder to find).

Don't know if I'd prefer a Kahr over a PPK ... but I wouldn't, in any case, buy a PPK-PPK/S for a carry pistol (although it's an easy pistol to conceal) ... However ... the wife's favorite pistol is (sigh) her PPK/S. I think she watched a few too many "Hunter" espisodes back in the day (McCall carried a PPK with mother-of-pearl stocks).

I love my PPK/s and carry it quite a bit. But I wouldn't pay $500 for one. The PPK/s and PPK are neat little guns, they carry like a dream, and I've never shot one that wasn't extremely accurate, altho I've had some that weren't all that reliable. If you can find a good one at a good price then everyone should have a PPK/s or PPK in their collection. If you're looking for a primary CCW then I'd pass.

actually this is more of a novelty gun than anything else, always wanted one. guess i'll keep looking. i thought the price was a bit steep as well...

PPK/S HOLDS ONE MORE ROUND. THAT IS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE. THE S&W VERSION, THE NEW ONES, ARE A BIT DIFFERENT/BETTER. THE BEAVERTAIL TANG IS LONGER TO PREVENT SLIDE BITE. THE TRIGGER IS A BIT LIGHTER, AND THE FEEDRAMP IS CUT AFTER THE BARREL IS IN PLACE, NOT BEFORE. HAD A INTERARMS, AND NOW HAVE THE NEW S&W. THE S&W IS A MUCH BETTER PISTOL. DEALERS CAN SELL EITHER FOR $450-$475 AND STILL MAKE A PROFIT. BREAK IT IN FOR ABOUT 200 ROUNDS, AND KEEP IT LUBED WELL, IT WILL RUN ALL DAY.

Try a post on this forum. When I was looking for one I posted here and got a S&W version PPK/S with 500 rounds through it in excellent condition shipped to me for $325.00 from a member here.:D

I've got one of the new PPK (via Smith & Wesson) models and like it. Gave $450 for it new. Upside to it is that it's thin, easily concealable in a waistband or cummerbund (Bond, James Bond), pretty darn accurate, very reliable, and the new ones have an improved double action pull for that first shot and an extended tang to eliminate slide bite. Downside (to me) is that the improved tang causes tang bite (eliminated with a dremel and a sailor's vacabulary), and a safety that works opposite to most. All in all, it's a solid piece of work. It's a chunk of steel which is a plus for durability but maybe a downside for ccw. As I said, I like mine. I will admit that I was Kahr ignorant when I bought mine. Would have at least considered getting a Kahr if I had it to do all over again. I think there might have been some reliability issues originally with the PPK/S that the PPK didn't have. I think those must have been fixed early because I don't think I've heard of any problems in a long time.

My uncle has one of the early ppk/s that was made in germany and imported by interarms. it's a nice gun i think. he thinks it's stupid because of the caliber and mag capacity. I like shooting coke bottles with it and the such, i just dont like it's hammer bite, after 20 rounds it really starts to hurt:uhoh:

other then that i like it:evil:

I have one of the new S & W versions and its a great piece!! Never has fail to go bang for me! I don't believe its a novelty gun - I like it because its nice and thin! I carry three different guns - the Glock 27, Kahr MK9, and the PPK/S. I don't feel underguned when I am carrying it. Great gun. I gave $465 for mine - around here thats pretty good.

I have a older Interarms mine is carried a lot 90% of the time Never been a bit of trouble I like mine and wouldn't trade it. In my area new S&W is 480 I was in store other day. I ask why he raised price. He said they raised $50 his cost and he passen it on. In Lexington KY last I saw they were $535 and $550 range.

My Interarms PPK has been 100% reliable with all types of ammunition tried.

I carry mine, but I don't recommend them. Reliability seems to be spotty with these pistols. A few, like mine, seem to be good, but I've heard of lots of problems.

The DA trigger is appalling. I'd guess that it's well over 20lbs of pull weight. In addition, chambering the first round reliably requires strong hands and some experience. I don't know if they're different now, but the sights on my PPK are pretty tiny.

I've also heard some rumors that the extractors aren't particularly robust.

That said, they're neat guns--mine is very shootable and quite accurate.

PPks

I've carried my PPK/S in an ankle holster for over 15 years. It was made by Manuhrin. To date I have a little over 6,000 rounds shot in it and I have never had a problem with it.

i'd say that's the #1 gripe i have w/my S&W ppk/s
(though the DA pull would be a near second)

nice little pistol, if abeit heavy

$500+ def. seems 2 high imo
i'd buy one again, it's a 'fun' novelty if nothing else

PPK.

I've had one for a little over 20 years now. Certainly not the best available today. But then, if you wanted a small semi-auto over.32 caliber, you were pretty much confined to a PPK.

The PPK has been with me from border to border and water to water. I still have it, but it does not see much daylight these days.

Its more accurate than it has a right to be..I guess its the fixed barrel.

This PPK has never malfunctioned. Thats good 'cause it does not have a slide lock. For that reason, I'd never buy another. Nor would I recommed buying one. Better pistols are available.

salty.

They where considered the best .32 or .380 sized pocket gun money could buy for decades. Also pretty much the worlds first DA auto that survied the sales market..they still make them. State of the art now, no but they still do work unless people have got tougher than back in 1929. It just takes a lot of work to tune one so they have a decent trigger pull and feed JHP ammo well. Most have no clue how to take one apart much less get a 3 pound SA pull into one.
