I really don't want my name on any lists the government has access to. We've all seen what can happen to people whose names end up in gun registration databases. I'd also prefer not to have my fingerprints on file. The fact that someone like Barack Obama (who wants a federal ban on concealed carry) may well be the next president just makes me even more wary to put my name on any lists of this nature.

What are your thoughts on this?

(Please don't turn this into a political thread. That means don't speculate on Obama's chances of being elected, why I should vote for the "lesser of two evils", etc)

Most CCW lists are state-run, and many (if not most) are confidential, i.e. no public access. And in PA, at least, there are no fingerprints required.

If you want to carry concealed without being on any kind of list, I suggest you move to Alaska or Vermont.

Forget about it, we already ahve your name on a list, or three, or a hundred.

Well, no reason to get on another one. Especially one related to firearms. I live in FL and the fingerprints are required here. They say the lists are confidential, but this is government we're talking about here, not a private corporation that actually has something to lose if confidential information is leaked. Those lists have been leaked in the past, and Hitlery Clinton pushed for a bill where background check info would be available thru public inquiry IIRC, or something like that anyway.

In order to become a lawyer I had to give fingerprints and undergo and FBI background check. I'm already on a list. The trick is, be the guy who owns the list. ;)

Concealed Weapons Permits are licenses issued by state governments to carry concealed weapons. Of course the issuing state is going to have a list of those to whom they've issued the license. Otherwise the license would have no legal effect and people would make their own at home.

A greater concern, I think, is for that list to be kept confidential and not published on the Internet or in the newspapers. At least a few states now have laws restricting access to that list of CWP holders. Virginia is one of those states, I think. All other states should do the same.

I'm as baffled as Robert Hairless is. How exactly do you have a permit system the government doesn't know about?

Get elected or appointed to the bench. Judges can carry with no permit in Florida according to Florida code 790.061.

Or, become a police officer. They can carry anywhere nationwide due to HR 218.

Or, become a criminal. They carry without permits all the time.

Otherwise, you'll have to get a permit like the rest of us substandard peon underlings in order to be legal.

Well, preferably there'd be no permit system at all.

Yup, I agree. So would many others, I think.

If you were trying to start a thread complaining about the need for Concealed Weapons Permits I've wasted my time and yours. I don't live in a hypothetical world, just the real one, and I've compromised with lots of things I don't particularly like all my life. In fact I am one of the most notorious compromisers on this and every other forum. I love compromises, I prefer to deal with people who like them too, and I even prefer to vote for candidates who compromise rather than those who won't. There's no help for me. I am a lost cause. I also choose my fights and reserve my efforts for those fights I stand a good chance of winning.

...be the guy who owns the list...

LOL. That is so very zen. But oh so true.

Your best bet to be able to legally carry concealed without a license/permit is to live in Alaska or Vermont, as previously stated.

I want a billion dollars and to not pay income tax, but that ain't going to happen either.

Just how the hell do you think you could get a CCW permit from a government organization and not be on a government organization list? D'uh?

Maybe if you gave the governor a "harumph?" Then, you could get gubernatorial approval and do an end run around the ccw process.

Yeah, you could engineer a situation where you save his life. Then, he'd be grateful and offer you whatever you wanted in return. Man, too bad Farley is dead. This would make a great Farley movie right up there with American Ninja, black sheep, and Tommy Boy.

Seriously, you're talking about the government here. Why would the process either be fair to all or make sense?

:barf:

your name went on "the list" when you purchased the gun. at least it does here in michigan. of course, i have heard people say that michigan is a gustopo state when it comes to guns. if you bought it new, it went on the federal list also. lets face it, when the govenment tries to take our guns, that will be the start of the next civil war! just remember, 1 elected official can not take away your guns, or ccw rights, it will take a bunch of them.

Alex45ACP, your profile doesn't state what state you are in, but as I'm sure you know, open carry is legal in many states.
Personally i agree with you, I don't feel that I need government permission (err, sorry a "permit") to do what is just and right. Nonetheless, at this point in time, except for two states that isn't legal. And I'm not willing to risk that.
Thus, it's open carry (which is legal here) for BozemanMT. And yes, sometimes that limits where I go, and that's a tradeoff I've decided to make.

There are no other solutions. Either you get permission or you go without permission.

By now your name and particulars have been fed into every laptop, desktop, mainframe and supermarket scanner that collectively make up the global information conspiracy, otherwise known as "The Beast."

Do you get gun related catalogs, belong to the NRA or subscribe to any gun magazines? If so you're already on the list.

Just to clarify, in Idaho, one does not need a permit to carry concealed as long as one remains outside of any city limits and is otherwise engaged in lawful activity such as fishing, hiking, etc. Not quite as nice as AK/VT, but still, better than nothing...

Umm... you just posted that, from your home (or work) computer... your name is now on a list of armed people who don't want their names on government lists.

LOL... I think....
